I remember during the 1940s my parents had a lot of similar old songs on shellac 78rpm records, played on an old HMV upright player, which I still have. Volume control was made by opening or closing a couple doors. All the records have long since disappeared or been broken, which was a major failing of these records. I suppose I could no longer buy the needles for it anyway. www.angelfire.com |

| 756416 | 2009-03-16 20:15:00 | WHY DOGS ARE BETTER THAN MEN Dogs do not have trouble expressing their feelings in public. Dogs feel guilty when they do something wrong. Dogs are content just being with you, no matter what you are doing. You can train a dog not to make a mess in the house. Dogs understand what the word "NO" means. Dogs don't want to bring their friends home for a beer. Dogs do not have a mid-life crisis and look for younger owners. Dogs admit it when they are lost. Dogs mean it when they kiss you. Dogs don't care if you put makeup on or not. Dogs are satisfied with a belly rub. Dogs are LOYAL and FAITHFUL. You can neuter dogs legally! Dogs miss you when you're gone. Dogs think you are a culinary genius. |

| 756418 | 2009-03-16 21:32:00 | I had a thought of collecting 'dance band and jazz' 78rpm records around 20/30 years ago when I still had a turntable capable of playing them, and it had a rather nice Shure cartridge with a 'basic' 78 rpm stylus, an M78 I think. But the problem in NZ compared to other countries is the small population. Considering the population was around 1.5 million in 1945, it would have been much less in the 20s and 30s, so there just wouldn't have been the number of 78s around. There used to be a local weekly auction, John Wards, and there were often some piles of 78s, but very few if any were in 'my genre'. I used to look around second hand shops in the Hutt and Wellington, but in the end I gave up on it. The early 78s when acoustic gramaphones were in use, had an abrasive filler in the shellac mix so that the needles would quickly wear down to fit the groove. This was not such a good idea later on when electric pickups came along, and in particular when lighter weight pickups appeared. Later shellacs did not have the abrasives added, and needle and sapphire/diamond styli radii were sized so that the needle sat about half way down the groove. Acoustic gramaphones wear out 78s much faster than a modern turntable would, so 78 collectors generally only play lesser prized records on them. Edit: I forgot...this site has around 24,000 78rpm record sides....www.jazz-on-line.com |
