756888 2009-03-16 06:50:00 The Mrs and I are deciding what to save up for, the 2010 winter Olympics look pretty good in Vancouver.

Anyone been?

I would like to go to a couple of Olympic events, but also discover more of Vancouver / Canada. Any recommended spots?

756889 2009-03-16 07:26:00 Vancouver is lovely. It has a beautiful (rugged) coastline with the snow covered mountain range in the background. Nice city too.

I was only there for a few days (in early Spring), but things to do:
* Take a ferry to Vancouver Island and see Victoria. Worth spending at least a night there. You can hire a car and explore the island further if you have more time.
* Do a tour of the Rockies. You can do a mini-circuit of Vancouver via Kamloops (dead-end hole) to Banff, then up to Jasper via the glacier highway before heading back to Vancouver. We did our tour using Greyhound buses with pre-paid accommodation and transfers. The elk in Banff wearing collars with bells are not pets ...
* Lots to see around Vancouver itself with great markets (the island one and chinatown) and a large park near the North Vancouver bridge (can't remember its name).
* Seattle isn't too far away and you can either drive or take a ferry there for a short diversion.

Other things to do but cost a bit more are taking a cruise up the inside passage from Vancouver to Alaska (or nearby) or flying to Toronto for a look around. The surrounding areas of Toronto are nice, but the city itself is nothing to get excited about.

There is of course the famous ski resort town of Whistler. Guess that will be pretty busy with the Olympics. :p

756890 2009-03-16 07:29:00 Yeah have family there.
Seen Vancouver itself, Victoria Is, Whistler and into Alberta.

Not too sure on the Olympics, they may go for a ballot sale. I couldn't get Beijing tickets even thou I went for the most $$ seats. Could only get the swimming so I chose not to go.

756892 2009-03-16 09:09:00 I was there in 1974 so I guess that makes my experience a little irrelevant now, but I sure liked the place. Reminded me of home, filthy and full of strangers.

Nah, just kiddin, I did like it though.

Cheers

756893 2009-03-16 09:18:00 All three of my kids have been there and loved it. One stayed on Campbell Island and loved that too - fishing for salmon and getting her catch canned was evidently a highlight, as was seeing a black bear in the wild... John H (8)
756894 2009-03-16 17:59:00 Just go for the lumberjack games more exciting and much cheaper they are usually held in Whistler. Vancouver is real nice also go to Banf, Jasper and Lake Louise gary67 (56)
756895 2009-03-16 18:57:00 I've been there a few times, as I have a sister lives in Victoria (the Provincial capital) on Vancouver Island.
Vancouver is a nice city with a lot to see.
I like Victoria better, a real charming place, kinda "old world" on one hand (or they like to think they are) and also very North American.
Three ways to get there; the ferry, very scenic and it should be done once. A flight from Vancouver int'l to Victoria, quick. And the best, catch a float plane from the basin downtown Victoria which'll take you downtown Vancouver (or vice-versa of course).
A drive through Vancouver Island is really worthwhile and those western beaches are something to behold.

Actually all of Canada is pretty neat; from BC which is real North West Coast, then through the Rockie's etc to the Great Plains; cowboys and cropping on a huge scale. The east is pretty fabulous too, with all the associated history and French culture of Montreal & Quebec (I'd go back there any day).

756896 2009-03-16 19:37:00 Lucky you, pine-o!!

Amongst others, Jen has covered a lot of things to see and do.
I'd go back to Vancouver any day. We found the people there incredibly friendly and helpful.
Even if you aren't into gardens and parks, I think you will be impressed (and relaxed) with those that Vancouver has to offer. I particularly remember Stanley Park, Butchart Gardens and Queen Elizabeth Park.
A lot of the city can be covered on foot, but their transport system is great. Take an all day pass on the skytrain, it's under 10 Canadian dollars.
Spend some time at Granville Island. Check out Gastown, that's in the city.
The Okanagan area is worth a visit (it's an up and coming wine area). As has been mentioned, Victoria Island is a must see, both day and night.
We never quite got to Whistler, some friends were taking us there, but we stopped on the way at a salmon hatchery and stayed longer than we thought we would!
If your budget can stretch to it, the Rockies is well worth considering, There are a wide range of tours, ours covered coach, boat and train. Forever etched in memory.
I imagine the ticket prices would be huge, but you might be able to get a package that makes it more affordable.

. . . At the moment we are just at the 'what should we save for?' stage, but from the responses here, Vancouver seems pretty good!

Flights seem to be around the $1400 return range, which is high, but heck it sounds like it's worth it .

We've just been married a year (both 26yo) and want to see a bit of the world before we start on children . I've never been out of the country, and the wife has been to Oz . I was considering a 'round the world' ticket, but I don't really like the idea of spending 1-3 days in a place . I don't think you could really get a 'feel' for it in that time .

Thanks for all the responses so far, seems like positive experiences so far .
