758059 2009-03-27 07:04:00 Thanks Jen

Umm.... you made it 6 months before locking I think - the first threads to be locked are dated 28-09-2008............

758060 2009-03-30 01:45:00 Reading a post is not enough from keeping it unlocked. You have to POST in it to keep it open. :)

I can do that. Come to think of it I do it all the time.

Hey! New idea!

Will the post-starter receive an e-mail notification that their post is about to close and be given notice/warning to keep it alive?

Just askin'

758061 2009-03-30 02:56:00 I had a look at the last page, and there's lots of lovely little padlocks. :D pcuser42 (130)
758062 2009-03-30 10:58:00 Moderators have the power.

So does Fairfax.

The majority vote was for three months before closing a thread but now this is re-opened in spite of having been locked earlier. I do note that all members did not vote.

We know that the members here are ruled by the rules and this forum is not a democracy in any event.

I am not even sure why a poll was put out in the first place.

Jen put out a Poll about closing threads.

A number of people voted but as I see it any thread can be kept open apparently.

63 voters out of the total membership,

758063 2009-03-30 11:59:00 I think I must be mis-reading your post.

The question was put to the members: How long do you want?
Vote results: 3-months won by majority (39%)
Action: It has been set to 3-months
Problem? None as far as Im aware, unless people deliberately decide to start trawling posts that are just shy of the 3-month mark and constantly post in them to be a pain.
For threads that *need* to be kept open for whatever reason, Mods can re-open them as they see fit. However, the primary reason for the auto-closing is so that n00bs dont post in a thread thats 5 years old and say "Hey I have a solution" or "Yeah my PC does something similar too", but instead are forced to start a new thread.

Democracy? Perhaps not quite, though this comes rather close. I fail to see what the fuss is about...

758064 2009-03-30 12:19:00 But the poll was locked and the thread was locked.
So why even have a poll.

I guess MY post has to do with only some of the MEMBERS voted.

The power is held by Fairfax and the moderators which is as it should be.

The "fuss" as you put it has been brought up by Members of this forum who seem to think that any threads should be locked after a period of time.

758065 2009-03-30 19:38:00 The poll was set to auto-close so it didnt drag on forever. You have a short period of time to vote for your government, you cant ***** and moan 18 months later "Oh but what about this person who didnt get the chance to vote because they werent here?"
Too bad, they didnt vote!

Yeah, only *some* of the members voted, theres over 16,500 members, good luck getting a vote from even 1/10 of them. The Poll closed, the thread should not have auto-closed as we have configured it to 3 months. All threads will close after 3 months of inactivity, thats just the way it works. No post = auto-close. Post != close.

All of this is completely regardless of the fact this is an internet forum, not a democratic country.

758066 2009-03-30 21:45:00 63 voters out of the total membership,

yep, 63 of the most vocal and active members......

I think it was good that we got a choice.
