758040 2009-03-21 01:24:00 I've often found good advice in quite ancient posts by doing a keyword Search here . If the results are really outdated, that's usually obvious & it's great to get a selection of opinions from variously-named threads .
Not everyone has the latest hardware or software .

Laura, you will still be able to do a search for and view advice in old threads, you just won't be able to make another post in them . The idea is to prevent random people replying to old threads when it is no longer necessary to do so and thus dragging them back up from the dead .

As far as the classic threads are concerned, I am sure a moderator would unlock them if there was sufficient demand to keep them open . Or else anyone interested could just bump it up just before the "expiry date" comes around .

Personally, I think the membership database should have an automatic regular culling at the same time . There are thousands of "members" who signed up for obscure reasons and did not return, as well as those who had just one problem or two and never needed PF1 again .

All accounts that haven't been used, ie logged on with, in 12 months should be terminated . Anyone who needs them again can simply rejoin .

I'm not scared . :D

758041 2009-03-21 02:30:00 I voted 1 month, but I think 3 months (now that I think about it a lil more) would be a good idea.

Yeah, we can re-open threads like the Fridge one if need be.
Its partly to prevent spammers from dragging up old threads and then some people 'assuming' its a fresh one without checking the date (Still happens semi-regularly), and also so that when a topic is old & closed, new people dont come and say "Hey I had a similar problem", they'll have to actually start a new thread and describe their actual problem.

I was soooooo tempted to mess with the Ads while I was at it, or secretly install a new skin for the forums ;)

758042 2009-03-21 02:47:00 Thanks for that information.
What about reducing the member database where people join and have made no posts at all?

There are some members (such as myself) who have signed up numerous names, so that people can't "cyber-vandalise" a person's image by posing as someone else.

Only thing if you did something like that is spam-bots can sometimes re-use the same name. Several times I've searched for a Spammers account-name on Google and found thousands of other results, some of them are *old* as anything!

If the bots come back and already have a Username pre-setup, its that much easier for them to spam us again ;)

This is why we simply perma-ban an account, rather than delete them :)

You don't have to delete banned accounts . In fact it would be desirable to keep them .

Just delete the unused, unbanned ones .
