2009-03-26 00:54:00 | Update. Went to DS this morning to get the correct resistor. Didn't have any 2.5W so looked at 5W. Their stock of resistors was, to say the least woeful. only a few and all of those either very high or very low Ohms. Nothing remotely near what I wanted (lots of pigeon holes for them-all empty). The staff didn't have a clue and didn't seem interested. Maybe if I had been going to spend hundreds they might have been keener. So have been thinking and will use Automotive bulbs if someone can tell me how many watts of bulbs I need. Cheers Colin

2009-03-26 10:16:00 | Hi Colpol Using a car light bulb is even more of a hassle and more expensive. You have to get a 12v, 2.4W bulb. This will give a reasonable assessment to the condition of your power supply by the brightness of the light. You will still need to measure the output voltage however. As far as DSE is concerned, whenever I have gone in there to get components or something technical, the phase, pay peanuts get monkeys comes to mind. Suggest you approach Jaycars NZ. Ask for their catalog number RR3268. This is a 56 ohm, 5 w wire-wound resistor. Their staff are always helpful. Cost is 48 cents. BURNZEE

2009-03-26 19:12:00 | Thanks Burnzee. Will try the bulb. Repco and Super Cheep are literally 5 minutes down the road. Jaycars are about 2 hours up the motorway. Wire and solder I have plenty of.

2009-03-26 22:44:00 | Update. Bought a bulb from Repco. 12V 3W (didn't have 2.5) Attached wires as needed. Connected it to the power supply- a brief flash as it burned out. Looks like PS stuffed.

2009-03-26 23:30:00 | Hi Colpol Hey, wait a minute!! As I said in an earlier post, testing with light bulbs can be a real hassle. Yah just gotta get the right one. You didn't, not surprised, and now you have a less than accurate result. :groan: According to my Ohm's Law and Mathematics results, you tried to pull 250 ma from a 200 ma supply. It just doesn't work that way. :groan: Also what does this mean: a brief flash as it burned out. What or perhaps watt burned out? The power supply or the light bulb. How do you know that? About now, guess you have had a gutsful :waughh: :angry and have decided to get a new power supply. Don't blame you but bear in mind the power supply may or may not be at fault. Do yourself a favor - get the resistor!! BURNZEE

You didn't, not surprised, and now you have a less than accurate result . According to my Ohm's Law and Mathematics results, you tried to pull 250 ma from a 200 ma supply . It just doesn't work that way . Also what does this mean: What or perhaps watt burned out? The power supply or the light bulb . How do you know that? The bulb blew as soon as I applied power . I know as I was looking at the bulb when it blew . About now, guess you have had a gutsful and have decided to get a new power supply . Don't blame you but bear in mind the power supply may or may not be at fault . Do yourself a favor - get the resistor!! Based on the blown bulb I went and brought a new PS . $30 at DS . Has multi voltage output and several different adapters, so I can use it for other needs . Set it up and plugged it in . Bingo . :banana:banana Back with the neat sounds through the headphones:clap Jaycars not a practical option . 1 1/2 hrs in, 1 1/2 Hrs back . + petrol . probably cost more in petrol and stress Big thanks to all who contributed . especially Burnzee . As usual PF1 comes up trumps . Now just gotta block those ads . Just kidding . Already blocked with advise from PF1:thumbs: |

2009-03-27 05:16:00 | Hi Colpol Thanks, glad to help. Fantastic you got your sounds again. You learnt from this experience too. Don't test a power supply without a load!! If your power pak blew the light bulb then cut the cord and get rid of it before it does any more damage.:yuck: Anyway all fixed. Great!! BURNZEE
