758086 2009-03-20 18:16:00 I was quite impressed with the Specs on the Lumix DMC-TZ7 compact camera. 12.1Mp and 12x Optical Zoom. This one also has Video capability with 720p AVCHD movie recording and a mini HDMI output.

It would be an ideal camera when I don't want to hump around my heavy SLR kit.

The DMC-TZ7 is listed in the several new products in the Photographer's Mail magazine this month.

My present camera is a TZ15 (TZ5 overseas), which, in my limited experience I find very good. I think that maybe it might just be a step down from the TZ7 that you refer to, Bantu.
Since my daughter bought me a subscription to D-Photo I've got quite keen and after playing around a bit, with a friend's SLR, I've been thinking, maybe something like that would be good.
But, we also like to record video now-and-then, so my thinking is possibly this Lumix GH1 might be a camera that would suit my requirements.

758088 2009-03-21 09:10:00 I'm sure video cams and digital stills will converge into one camera soon.

What bothers me is the small lenses compared with the old 35mm cameras. No matter what the manufacturers say about image quality, a lens 30% smaller - or more - simply cannot see as many photons as a bigger lens. The more light the camera recieves, the better the photo.

You'll note professional press photographers still use much larger albeit digital cams.

Professional photographers don't buy a necessarily big camera because it's got a big lens, they buy it because its got a big sensor which allows for a wider dynamic range. They then buy the lens type and quality to suit their work and budget. Smaller lenses in theory can actually be ground to closer tolerances easier than larger lenses, but large or small you can get great quality or poor quality lenses. It depends on how much you are prepared to spend. Of course on a fixed lens camera this is determined by the manufacturer based on cost/profit considerations.

I'd love to get the G1HD but considering a twin lens kit for just the G1 is not far off two grand....! Well, I would certainly have to consider a traditional DSLR like the Canon EOS 1000D twin lens kit for $1300 or the Olympus E-520 DSLR twin lens kit for $1240.

758089 2009-03-21 19:15:00 What would be the limiting factors, for starters, in purchasing a DSLR with a single lens kit, if a budget didn't stretch as far as the 2 lens kit? jcr1 (893)

DSLR is good, they actually are the same quality as the higher ends without the speed or the full frame for most forms of photog .

2 kit lens is good, many pro's who go hiking or travelling rather have light lenses, used at f/8 they are superb .

Thou you won't get low light lenses or fast lenses for sports or a wide aperture to blur the back out ie . portraiture .

For travel and bumming around the 2 kit lenses are very good .

758092 2009-06-20 05:40:00 I suppose we'll have to wait and see.....probably? possibly?

They are now available from PhotoWarehouse, POA. So I requested price (because the concept really interests me), reply was .....wait for it, $3995,.
But trolling around for "Micro Four Thirds", I came across this,
www.dpreview.com

Fascinating in it's "retro-ness". I wonder what it'll be worth here?
