The good thing about radio is that you could use a VPS which is cheaper- since no data is required to be stored. Have a look at http://boosh.fm/ they even have a 256k mp3 stream! You can store data on a VPS... almost all VPS providers will give you a system that basically looks like an independent machine - you can treat it like a physical box, and do more or less what you like with it.

I didnt say you couldnt - I just mean its expensive. $69/month gets you 4gb storage INCLUDING OS!

Even if they do peering theyl still charge you for the data wont they?

Starter $53.29 15GB $4.44/GB extra gbs :banana

856255 2010-02-10 05:01:00 I didnt say you couldnt - I just mean its expensive. $69/month gets you 4gb storage INCLUDING OS!Which ripoff artist wants to charge you that? You can get a perfectly good VPS for a hell of a lot less than that with more disk space. The only justification for that price is if it's a Windows VPS (they have license costs to pay for, and require more resource-intensive virtualisation techniques), or if it includes a lot of international bandwidth.

Even if they do peering theyl still charge you for the data wont they? Not usually - peered data is national, and most VPS plans will have free / unlimited national data. Non-peered traffic is often routed overseas, and therefore costs you in international bandwidth.

Good international bandwidth at datacentre prices will often cost $4-5 per GB; it's not cheap!

If you want stacks of cheap international bandwidth, and you're happy with a higher latency, host it overseas. If you need a low latency, host it here (but be prepared to pay megabucks for international data).

856256 2010-02-11 02:39:00 Icecast (www.icecast.org/) (see wikipedia (http:)) is quite popular for streaming media. There's also SHOUTcast (www.shoutcast.com) which I've come across a lot too. That said, I haven't had experience in setting either of these up for a radio station. sal (67)

When I saw peering I visualised routers 'taking a shortcut' across wellington from host to client instead of say going to auckland and back again. Perhaps this is completely wrong.

One of top 5 google search results for VPS charges that. I dont think the OP was wanting international data?

Openhost is about half the price with linux.

Perhaps this is completely wrong. This is often the case - major peering exchanges are located in Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch.

Openhost is about half the price with linux. After having to deal with their technical support and some rather badly misconfigured systems, I wouldn't recommend Openhost.

Having used their services on and off for several years, Sitehost (http://sitehost.co.nz) is outstanding.
