856140 2010-02-08 01:19:00 I find the Satsuki Decoder Pack 4000 will play most things, it's free just google it.
hth

I am always wary of codec packs, either they contain malware or install too many codecs that you don't need which conflict and cause even more problems.

VLC plays everything. Never had it fail.

I have. It doesn't play everything. It doesn't play anything encoded with VP7 (and I'm sure there are a few more)

CCCP sounds very Russian to me - something I would avoid :(

856147 2010-02-08 20:41:00 wiki.videolan.org shows all the formats it supports

K-Lite Codec Pack (Which I use for all non-7 machines) is now based off ffdshow AFAIK:
en.wikipedia.org

I use Shark 007 Codec Pack for Win7, as it doesn't mess with the built-in stuff.

It's all very well and good MS now supporting h.263 / h.264 ootb, but they don't support the .MKV Matroska container format, only AVI and MP4, and AVI is slowly starting to die off.. Take a look at the likes of Handbrake no longer supporting it, for good reason too.
Everything is heading towards h.264 HD video. See here for some good reading by the Handbrake folks:
