759135 2009-03-24 16:00:00 Well - here we are in the advent of the next Great Depression and I wuz thinkin' about all the businesses that should be "depression-proof", not that I want to become a new entrepreneur, but I like to keep a thumb on trends and tendencies so that I can be revered, old, sage-like and wizened to the less socially erudite .

I figger that places that are truly financially secure would have to be - Oh, I dunnow - perhaps a bar/pub .

People drink to celebrate their good fortune and happy times during prosperous periods and they drink to forget about their problems and bad fortune during times of instability .

Donut shops too, appear to be recession-proof . People will buy dozens of the fat pills to share with co-workers and cubical dwellers like themselves, and in poor times this is their cheap breakfast .

Gas/petrol stations don't appear to be a safe haven for liquidity and secure incomes for the owner . Prices are too high for those who sell pencils and apples on street corners to buy enough fuel for a nice Sunday drive with the wife and kiddies - so that's not a good venue .

Posh, upper-crust restaurants appear somewhat secure however . The rich can always muster a few shekels for dinner if they shake out their jewelry cases or Gucci handbags a little .

Can anyone else think of a fairly recession proof vocation?

1) Teaching - as those who can't work for a living, teach - even during good times
2) Police - since crime goes UP during tough times; job security insured
3) Postal carriers - although they are losing to the internet via E-mail now
4) Firemen - since things still burn - and some "accidentally" more than normal - during tough times .
5) ?

That's all well and right, but I see problems there with your list .

1) Can you afford the spoon and ladle to SERVE the soup?
2) How much will live yeast culture cost? Flour? Pans?
3) Who's gonna have nickles and dimes nowadays?
4) Everyone will hock their CD players .

NEWS FLASH! We are getting hit with a big swarm of earthquakes here at the North of the Salton Sea, which is the Southern end of the famous San Andreas Fault . I live on the San Jacinto arm of that same fault . If this screen goes blank, you'll know why .

One and the same thing, Geekster. But governments often have a more flexible line of credit....
