758962 2009-03-24 06:07:00 FL Studio (http://flstudio.image-line.com/)
Not free though but there is a free trial download

758963 2009-03-24 06:11:00 Can vouch for the FL Studio program. Friend who's a music freak uses it and it seems to satisfy his demands.

But I don't understand - you want your kid to lose interest in music? Typo? :p

758965 2009-03-24 06:28:00 By music software do you mean like a notation program for writing out music, and be able to have it played back to you or print it?

If so I would highly recommend finale (http://www.finalemusic.com/)
You can get a free trail and the software starts from $10 up to to $600+ depending on what you are looking for.
