| 757591 | 2009-03-18 20:29:00 | My mains pressure hot water cylinder is making a 'hissing' noise randomly. The noise goes off when I turn on any of the taps briefly. The noise returns after a while when the water tap is turned off, and sometimes, it's 'quiet for the whole day or even a few days. This intermitten fault is quite annoying! What could be the cause? Can it be the temperature is set too high? I do notice that the hot water is rather hot. There's a control knob on top of the cylinder (blue in colour) which I think is for adjusting the temperature but it seems to be locked - I can't turn it. BTW, it's a Rheem 180 litre mains-pressure tank. |

| 757592 | 2009-03-18 20:40:00 | I suspect a knob on top of the tank is to shut the water off - probably wise not to turn it ? If the water temp is set too high (that will cause the noise you describe, much like an electric jug just before it boils) the thermostat is usually toward the bottom of the tank behind a metal cover. When the cover is removed, be aware that there may well be exposed electrical terminals that could set you to dancing while unable to breathe; not a great way to spend the rest of your life. |

| 757595 | 2009-03-19 08:17:00 | May not be the same in your case, but I had a hissing sound which turned out to be a small hole in the (plastic?) main feed pipe to the cylinder, this pipe came up through a hole in the concrete floor & the leak was under the concrete, Bu**er of a job to fix. | jebby (4580) | ||
| 757596 | 2009-03-19 08:53:00 | If the water gets too hot on one of those cylinders, there is a safety valve which blows off to relieve pressure. Running another tap reduces the pressure even more. You will probably find that there is an overflow pipe outside somewhere that is dribbling when the cylinder is "hissing" But you are right, it sounds as though you need to reduce the temperature and that will solve everything. How to do that? - sorry, haven't a clue for that model. |

| 757598 | 2009-03-20 08:52:00 | Assuming this is an electric H/W cylinder, I think there should be a removable cover plate low down on the front where the power cable goes in. If you look under that (AFTER TURNING THE POWER OFF FIRST) you may find a small pot which can be turned with a screwdriver. |
