760443 2009-03-29 06:18:00 First headline news item on One News tonight: an Auckland recycling company is stockpiling glass waiting to be recycled. Hooray, big deal. somebody (208)
760444 2009-03-29 07:11:00 Ok I've tried to workout why that is news but it completely defeats me. That's worse than the couldn't get a latte story they led with once. Twelvevolts (5457)
760445 2009-03-29 07:27:00 16 ton stockpile and its headline news. prefect (6291)
760446 2009-03-29 07:28:00 It was made out (in the promos) to be a matter of the recycling company dumping recyclables in landfill - but when the actual piece aired, it was a different story altogether. Furthermore, the company came out (via a statement) and said that the reason it's stockpiled is that they're waiting for modifications to processing equipment, which is due to be done by the end of April. somebody (208)
760447 2009-03-29 09:25:00 That is not the reason for the stock-piling, it is because there is no longer any demand from China for what amounts to rubbish which could have been re-cycled profitably once, but not anymore.

The Global Depression works in mysterious ways.

760449 2009-03-29 19:52:00 I thought the point was the glass was full of other rubbish, therefore thats why they can't go ahead and process it. pctek (84)
760450 2009-03-29 20:16:00 I guess if people come away from a news item with differing opinions on what the piece's point was, the journalists can't be doing their job very well.... johcar (6283)

No.

The Owner said that because glass was heavier than paper, all the rubbish was sitting on top of the pile - underneath was all glass.

Yeah - RIGHT :)

760452 2009-03-29 20:31:00 Frankly, I'd rather see 10 boring stories about recycling than have a newly-arrived tourist turn on the TV in his hotel room and be confrunted with 3 stories in a row about babies being bashed, tourists being raped or people getting stabbed on their own driveways.
Not a good look.
