857221 2010-02-11 07:43:00 Hi there,

This is my first post . I'm at my wit's end so am hoping the good people at this forum can help me!

I have a Maxtor Basics 500GB external hard drive, but it packed up after a few months (computer one day just couldn't "see" the drive) .
I thought I would use the hard drive as actual storage and so hadn't backed it up (I know, you don't need to tell me . . . . I've learnt the hard way that this was incredibly stupid) . Anyway, most of the contents are just photos but of course of sentimental value . . . .

So the drive is still under its warranty and I've already spoken to Seagate about this and they said yes it was likely to be covered by warranty but that I needed to get the data after off it before sending it back to them .
So I took it to a place a few weeks ago to get the data recovered and that's where the issues continue . . . . I'm no "techie" but from what I understand they are after a specific part that is required for them to fix the drive before they can actually retrieve the data off . Unfortunately they're having real issues trying to source one and they (and I) have been looking all over the net . The part required is an ST3500820AS firmware SD35 . (They've tried replacing it with an ST3500320AS but said it didn't work) .

I found someone else on TradeMe with the exact same situation (ie wanted this exact part to fix a hard drive in order to recover data) and I wanted to see if he had found a solution . . . but unfortunately TradeMe wasn't allowed to put me in contact with him .

So my question is: Does anyone have this part that I could use/borrow temporarily or buy?

If not, does anyone know where I could buy one from?

Any help is greatly appreciated .

It does not look good.

857224 2010-02-11 08:19:00 Hi there, yes I am in Auckland. craigzgurl (15622)
857225 2010-02-11 08:32:00 Are you near Mt Eden?? I could try a program and see if it can recover whatever. I tried it previously on a memory card ,windows couldnt even recognise, and managed to recover photos off the memory card for someone some time ago Speedy Gonzales (78)
857226 2010-02-11 08:41:00 Thanks for that offer. Just a question and please pardon my ignorance, but isn't a memory card and an external hard drive quite different?! Also at the moment, the hard drive is still at the repair place so I would need to get it back off them.... I'll see if anyone is able to help out with a replacement part, but if there's no parts forthcoming, I'll totally contact you again re your recovery program, if that's okay. Thanks :) craigzgurl (15622)
857227 2010-02-11 08:49:00 The point is, a memory card is still a storage device (like a hard drive). And windows no matter what the guy did (the guy who brought it here), couldnt even see it, let alone read it. The program I used then managed to see what was on it. And I recovered the photos off it. Then I formatted the memory card Speedy Gonzales (78)
857228 2010-02-11 08:56:00 Okay. That sounds like something I should try. I'll see if I can get the hard drive back from the recovery guy and get in contact again when I've got it. Thanks. craigzgurl (15622)
857229 2010-02-11 09:03:00 No probs . Its better than nothing . And if it doesnt work, well at least we tried .
