857164 2010-02-11 02:55:00 Hi, I want to buy a desktop pc for surfing nthe web. I am currently using my daughters old Dell and use it for email, banking, airline bookings etc. I see harvey Normans advertising an Acer e-machine el1333 with 20' monitor, windows 7 home premiun for $795. This sounds like a good deal. Are these computers reliable? Are there better options? Look forward to your advice. donald (15621)
857165 2010-02-11 03:10:00 Assuming its 2GB of ram, its ok for browsing and home user desktop work. You certainly wont be doing any gaming on it :P

Prob cant do a lot better price wise, but its fairly low spec being only single core for a start. Acer also don't have the best name in Desktop PC's .

857166 2010-02-11 03:11:00 Ewwwwww, Acer, dont do it!...they are tempting you with their sweet 20"LCD and flash operating system, but dont listen to strangers...LOL...!!

I reckon Dell would have better support than Harveys, and thats the bugger that sucked those investors of loads of money while keeping his flash 3 million $ dollar home in Auckland....

Go to HP.co.nz, or Dell.co.nz, if you require a pre-built machine. You will pay more but will have better support for consumer based products...............just!

857168 2010-02-11 03:28:00 Have you considered getting something that can be economically serviced after the warrantee runs out? PENTIUM (426)
857169 2010-02-11 21:10:00 If all you are doing is web browsing, you could get a netbook, 20" monitor, usb keyboard and mouse. Plug the lot into the netbook and use it as a desktop. Then you have the benefit of being able to disconnect it all and use the netbook on its own when you want to... utopian201 (6245)
857170 2010-02-11 21:47:00 Acer e-machine el1333 . Are these computers reliable?

Hell no. They have ECS motherboards which are the pits.

Don't buy a "brand" - they are no "brands" really. Only the parts inside have actual manufacturers, from good to bad. It's the only way to ensure reliability.

Motherboards: Asus or Gigabyte
Hard Drives: Seagate or Western Digital
Power Supplies: Corsair, Enermax or Antec
Monitors: Viewsonic, ASUS, Dell (yes a contradiction)
NOT Dell computers though.

Get one custom built, you can still have a range from basic systems to high end with quality parts. You will also get more than just the crap 1 year warranty too.
