856676 2010-02-09 20:59:00 Due to certain constraints, my wireless access point is placed in a rather non-ideal location, so I thought about getting an extension cable so i can keep my AP where it is, but let the antenna reach out into a better location.

I know there are losses due to the cable, so has anyone tried doing something similar?

I'm afraid that I'll end up paying for an expensive cable, and end up with the same weak signal anyway since all the increased signal from better positioning of the antenna is nulled by cable loss...

856677 2010-02-09 21:03:00 Probably be better getting something like this ? (www.dse.co.nz) Speedy Gonzales (78)
856678 2010-02-09 21:59:00 How far away is it? are you getting very bad signal? pkm (13527)
856679 2010-02-09 22:04:00 What access point do you have? Coaster (270)
856680 2010-02-09 23:10:00 yes I'm leaving my options open to those antennas
but I'm just slightly tempted by the cheaper alternative offered by the extension cable

in the house all the room can get some signal
I just want to have stronger signal coverage because in some rooms the signal drops out

AP is a D-link DIR-300, uses RP-SMA so cables and antenna can be fitted easily

856682 2010-02-10 00:08:00 Depends on the make / model of your wireless unit.

We use DLink, we have the wireless in less than a ideal location as well.

What, one was to replace the stock standard stubby antenna with a 5db antenna, that alone improved the signal through out the house by 100% and a constant excellent signal.

You could maybe run a Lan cable from the wall outlet or router so that you could mount the wireless unit in a more suitable location as well.

856683 2010-02-10 01:04:00 the extension cable is what I am looking at, I'll probably get it from ebay so it's cheaper
since people have good experience with higher gain antenna, I should really consider that

856684 2010-02-10 02:40:00 Id get a proper antenna first then consider an extension. pkm (13527)
856685 2010-02-10 02:42:00 Extension cable is OK but where will you put your old antenna?

With the D-Link 5dBi Wireless Antenna ANT24-0501 from DSE it has a stand, so you can stick it somewhere and not have it fall over.

If you want a cheaper one, there are many on Trademe, eg: www.trademe.co.nz
