I actually wonder... how much damage are we doing to the environment by burning fossil fuels (i.e. candles), using disposable batteries for torches, and all of the "other" environmental effects such as transportation, manufacturing and so disposal of these products? Is it maybe better for the environment for us to keep our lights on during earth hour, rather than burning things and using energy sources which ultimately end up in landfill?

In all seriousness though, I think the organisers of this campaign have done a brilliant job - they've achieved their aim, which is to raise awareness of the issues they're backing, whether people agree with them or not.

759501 2009-03-28 07:29:00 How come everyone thinks dams are so green anyway? wiping out a whole ecosystem, the carbon all the trees in the valley would have stored over the 100's of years, the pollution from making dam.

Although they may be "greener" then say a coal plant, they are by no means "green".

Come back and post when your candle accidentally burns all the money and/or gets knocked over by the (angry) loser of the game and your house burns down.

And what about those red lights on the Auckland Sky Tower huh? What an absolute waste of power. I'm sure no plane would accidentally crash into it without them on...

hmm...

759504 2009-03-28 07:42:00 I installed a 200w light just for this event, Its radiating out around the neighbourhood, I've had to put on my sunnies, and I can feel the part of my head that at one time had hair on it start to burn. Metla (12)

759506 2009-03-28 08:49:00 3) The focus should be on long-term things - i.e. people should insulate their houses, use more efficient heating, turn off unused appliances, and so on. We should be putting emphasis on sustainable electricity generation, new technologies to support transportation (i.e. electric vehicles)

Can't wait for the planet to warm up another 2 deg celcius, I think of the reduction in the amount of heating needed over the winter months, 21 deg at present inside for the heat pump.

House is well insulated, is it to keep the cold out or the heat in, another 2 deg here then.

We have shares in a company that's been in this conservation thingy for 10 years and we are still to see them into production motor vehicles, power generation units and super broadband speeds.

Lurking.

759507 2009-03-28 10:22:00 We actually had the lights ON during Earth Hour - so we could see on the trampoline (right outside the window) at my cousin's place. :p pcuser42 (130)
759508 2009-03-28 20:34:00 SWMBO was obeyed and we truned ours off.

Did anyone see the ad's for it? Showed people outside Christchurch cathedral with candles. Now there not going to to anything bad to the environment are they!? Lets all turn off our efficient electric lights, get in our cars and drive to the cathedral and light un-efficient candles so that we can full the air with smoke!

YEY!

Idiots.
