760558 2009-03-30 02:33:00 Dean... you're missing the point.

I don't care if it's 20 and 60, or 10 and 40... it doesn't matter.
It's a disproportional amount of Maori offenders, but everyone's too scared to ask why, because they just get shouted down as "racist".

It could be Indians, Chinese, Martians... I don't care.
But when the news is filled every night with violent crimes being commited by predominantly one race, it's hard to ignore.

And when a political party set up solely for the benefit of that one race, stays silent... it's worth commenting on.
Otherwise it's Paul Henry's elephant in the room all over again.

760559 2009-03-30 02:40:00 In the real world those numbers are people.

Well said Rob

Exactly which quarter would that be, Cicero?

760562 2009-03-30 04:44:00 Indeed well said Peter.

But in the end someone is going to have to address the problem and the sooner the better.

This sweeping things under the carpet and looking the other way simply can’t go on.

And Maori are under-represented in university graduations, over-represented in poverty and health statistics too. Could there possibly be a link between all of these things?

I propose that these things are all interlinked - and that to pick out just one set of statistics regarding Maori - crime and imprisonment rates - is, at best, short sighted.

There has always been a link between poverty and crime in any jurisdiction.

760564 2009-03-30 05:15:00 I predict a bit more sweeping under the carpet. Thanks to the 9 yr labor be soft on the crooks years it isnt kosher yet to link the crimes to anyone race. You are however at the moment allowed to beat around the bush and make pathetic excuses for the criminals.
The tide is turning and the linkage will be made once the liberals have been discredited once and for all.
It can and will happen and an example is in Sri Lanka at the mo. The SLA army has cornered and is on the verge of destroying tamil terrorists. They are belly aching to all and sundry about having to surrender instead they want a cease fire so they can rearm
The most beautiful thing is the world aint listening the terrorists are going to meet their maker. All the worlds liberals wringing their hands isnt working for once.
If it can happen on the world stage it can happen in nz so watch out lefty liberals you time has come and gone.

That's the crimes that are obvious.....the Chinese (or any Asians for that matter) tend to do crimes of other nature and wouldn't do it in direct sunlight like the ones we hear about everyday.

Pity National need the Maori Party.... I can't see National being harder than Labour. Other parties, yes, but not National.

Did you grow up in South Auckland, by any chance?
I did.

So I'm a little more qualified than some to discuss why Maori are under-represented in out universities or many skilled professions.

Not racist rantings - real life. When I went to school in the 70's (and no doubt it's the same these days) most kids went home, got their homework out of the way, then mucked around with their mates.
When exams came up, they studied and wanted to do well.

Many Maoris, however, didn't even go home - preferring to hang out playing Space Invaders and learning to use spray paint in new and creative ways.
Homework? Exams?

Consequently, they did poorly at school, school sucked and they dropped out and started cute little gangs like the Mongrel Mob and Black Power.

Not because of their skin colour.
Not because of oppression by whitey.
Not because of terrible things done to their ancestors 150 years before they were even born...

But because they were lazy asses who were taught that the world owed them a living.
The constant tax-payer handouts for being the "right" colour only reinforces this behaviour.

It's kinda bugging me.... shouldn't I have said "disproportionate"?
