857036 2010-02-11 01:32:00 I'd agree with Canon or HP. I tend to prefer Canon, though that's just because I find their software less bloated. inphinity (7274)
857037 2010-02-11 02:29:00 I have had umpteen HP printers over the years, and have never had a problem yet. These have been a mixture of lasers and inkjets.

My current laser is an HP Laserjet 2300d, and the inkjet (which I just use for colour printing/scanning/faxing) is an HP Photosmart C6180 All in one which I have had for a couple of years (I think).

The inkjet has a paper feeder, which I highly recommend if you intend to do multipage copying or faxing.

I once owned a Canon printer, and it was such a pile of dung that I have never had one since. It simply would not feed paper properly - the rollers would not grasp the sheets. The support I got from Canon consisted of "what paper are you using?" When I told them, they said "there is your problem right there, you are not using Canon paper". What a crock - I bought Canon paper, and the fault was identical of course. I have never bought a Canon product since.

As another poster has said, the HP software isn't flash, and I don't remember what the Canon software was like. I note that Canon Pixma (sp?) printers are regularly at the top of Consumer's tests.

857038 2010-02-11 07:42:00 I've got an Epson CX8300. The scanner side of things is great (Epson seem to have always made good scanners), but the printer is pretty ordinary. Okay for basic printing, but not good for pictures or photos. However at $89 had to complain about.
I would only buy HP, Canon or Epson.

857039 2010-02-11 18:59:00 I’ve got a Canon MP210 that cost a whole $29 ($49 - $20 cash back) and it’s great.

I’ve even refilled the cartridges a couple of times with cheap ink off Trade Me and I still can’t fault it.

Scanner works fine too, so it’s Canon for me.

857040 2010-02-11 22:32:00 Me and my flatmate bought a Multi Function Canon the other day for $39 at warehouse stationary! doesn't have seperate cartridges tho but meh it's good enuf for what we would use it for (it came with free ink - I checked the price on the ink at it was $79 for black and colour in 1pack or something like 49 each). So our printer is half the price of the ink!
(didn't come with usb cable tho)

857041 2010-02-12 07:17:00 If you don't do much colour printing look for a make that will print black even though a colour cartridge is empty. My late unlamented Brother did not and it was a pain that it would not print when a cartridge was empty. Empty I might add because of frequent and noisy head cleaning. tutaenui (1724)
857042 2010-02-16 04:03:00 Thanks all for your responses. Have not yey decided on what to buy, there seems to be almost an unlimited choice, all your information will be of assisitance in the final choice. Thanks again. rny (6943)
857043 2010-02-16 04:33:00 The old HP Inkjets have very nice print quality, however their newer printers come with incredibly bloated software (eg: force you to install 900MB+ of crap you don't need)

Lexmark also had the problem of installing random crap, not as much as HP mind you, but Canon for example don't do it, so if they don't need to do it, nobody else does either.

I wouldn't recommend Brother, I've heard many bad things about them.

On top of that, two of my friends bought Brother MFCs, and they found that they waste ink like it's going out of fashion. Also, I think both of them broke down pretty quickly.
