760848 2009-03-30 22:27:00 So, having been doing a bit of cold calling (Yeah everybody hates it), and taking on a new sales guy doing likewise to push our product, and Ive noticed one thing: Apparently many businesses just don't care about saving $$?

I'm not wanting to advertise, so I wont go into specifics, but if somebody rang me and said "Hey, I can save your business $XXXX, its easy to get switched onto and you get lots of cool new stuff too", then I'd be interested. Maybe I'm just too frugal.

It'd be like Xnet ringing up and saying "All our broadband plans are free, you now only pay 30c per-GB for the data", who wouldn't wanna sign up? Provided of course the service-level was there to support such a move to said provider, really it would be a no-brainer, right?

Interestingly enough, businesses just don't seem to be hurting in what is supposed to be an economic depression & tough times financially? Is it just me that's noticed this? It could be just me?

Chill.

760849 2009-03-30 23:08:00 It looks to me like a lot of companies are using the news of the recession as an excuse to dump staff.

Fulton Hogan are apparently going to drop 200 or so staff - yet their roading contracts have not changed.

760850 2009-03-30 23:23:00 Douglas Medicines where my father works is starting to lean a little bit. A few days per month my father comes home 2-3 hours early because there is simply nothing to do anymore on that day. qazwsxokmijn (102)
760851 2009-03-30 23:27:00 The trouble Fulton Hogan are facing is very real.

As is the trouble facing the rest of NZ.

We have priced over 2 million dollars worth of demolition work this year, Not a single project has gone ahead, we haven't had any work of substance all year and we need 100's of thousands of dollars of work each month just to survive.

The fact that we aren't knocking down buildings means the builders won't be employed to erect new ones, the architects won't be designing them, electricians, plumbers, painters won't have any work, fittings won't be purchased, the flow on effect is in the untold millions.

Its going to get a lot worse yet.

760852 2009-03-30 23:38:00 It depends a little on what type of business you are in.

As Metla has said, anyone in the infrastructure industry is in deep poo.

Same with retail. One example of people who shoudn't suffer, and may even be buisier, is garages and mechanics. People are not going to be buying new as much, and because of that there will be more older cars around, which need more work than new cars. Around here thats very noticible.

PC shops - we've noticed the retail side of things drop right off, but the repairs are busier than ever. Obviously thats not the same everywhere though. Take Pctek as an example.

Everyones just gotta grin and bear it.

Chill.

If you ran a business you would probably be sick of people ringing up with ways to save you money. They come so often that to hear them all out and weigh up the pro's and cons you would have to employ someone just to vet them.

Having your time wasted costs a lot of money.

Pretty sure there must be African-Americans and Asians aswell on Wall St and the likes.

These guys are greedy criminals.

760857 2009-03-31 00:01:00 Yeah true, thats a good point Metla!
I personally blame Briscoes with their weekly "Sale" on the same crap over and over :p People just arent trusting of a bargain, even at the Warehouse, there's always the *catch*, and thats what I think might be influencing some people, not to mention we're possibly not approaching the right target market currently.

But yeah, time = money
