858243 2010-02-14 04:49:00 I belong to a Club which will have to register a new Domain Name.

I would like to know what are the advantages of expressing the name in a particular way.

Lets use a bogus club for our example - The Broadband Users Club.

We could use several variations such as:
Thebroadbandusersclub.org.nz
The.broadband.users.club.org.nz
The-broadband-users-club.org.nz

There are other possible variations such as leaving out the word "The".

All are possibly valid. However does the way a Domain Name is expressed affect the way that search engines pick up and list the site?
Are there any other not so obvious advantages?

Does the use of capital letters in place of small letters have any effect?

Thank you

858244 2010-02-14 04:53:00 There will be no affect on search engine rankings as they are based on content rather than a domain name. Sweep (90)

The most important thing is to make the domain easy to spell - i.e. telling someone to go to "the dot broadband dash users dot club dot co dot nz" is more painful than telling them to go to "broadbandusersclub dot co dot nz", or "b b u c dot co dot nz" for example.

Domain names are also case insensitive - try going to PRESSF1.co.nz, PressF1.co.nz, pressf1.co.nz, and you'll notice they all go to the same place.

858246 2010-02-14 05:11:00 in the case of using dots between words it would mean you need to higher level domain first.

The.broadband.users.club.org.nz

in this case you would need to buy club.org.nz first.

858247 2010-02-14 05:22:00 Ideally you want the domain name to match the theme or specifically keywords from titles and content within the website . This will optimize your site in terms of SEO (search engine optimization) . Thus google will rank the site higher in the serps (search engine results pages - unique content/authority back links also help) . You may want to also use related keywords (called long tail keywords), if your chosen domain name is taken .

Also perhaps use a popular searched term for the domain name if you want to attract targeted and increased visitors to your web site . Use Google's popular keyword tool ( . google . com/select/KeywordToolExternal" target="_blank">adwords . google . com) to find popular searched terms - which you could apply to your domain name . It will display no . of searches both local and world wide; You may want to use Exact match (rather than broad), in the drop down list . Perhaps also select show all in the other drop down box to get other stats - including market value if you intend to monetize the site a little, get monthly searches, etc .

Also need to check any competition of other sites, that may list ahead of your domain name in search results, which would occur if a competitive domain name (or combination of) is chosen . Perhaps Google search your possible domain title name to see the number of search results . Too many and would be difficult to get listed in the first pages - and hence little visits from searchers . Unless you provide plenty of targeted key worded unique content and get authority back links . Be careful not to add to many keywords in the url title (Google might see as spam) . I think 65 -70 characters is the limited before the title is truncated in search results .

Do not add any ads (particularly adsense), until at least a month after site creation/visitor increase/content creation or Google will hit the site with it's dreaded sandbox ( . rankquest . com/seotips/2005/10/what-is-google-sandbox . html" target="_blank">www . rankquest . com) (I know - as others I know!)- your site will get buried back in the serps for several months to about a year or so - making it hard for visitors to find .

858248 2010-02-14 06:14:00 Holy hell.

Just keep it as simple as possible.

That is all.

I'm too use to USA SEO/web/blog help master forums (where we provide long responses) I'm involved with. Maybe I should have linked to articles, posts that I and other members have written...

URL's are simple but what's beneath, many don't know for optimization but should if they want to rank...

858250 2010-02-14 06:45:00 Thank you for your replies.
I agree with keeping it simple but some club members have other ideas.
The information provided has been a great help.

858251 2010-02-14 08:05:00 Short domain names are easier to remember, easier to type, easier to read over the phone, easier to include in a text message!
Many people assume that you must grab all the publicity you can from Google, but maybe your group is semi-private and you don't want the whole world using your bandwidth and costing you money! Getting listed on Google is most relevant if you are advertising/selling something - i.e. you hope to generate revenue to pay for the bandwidth used.
And don't include the word 'dot' in the name - domain names have enough dots already!

858252 2010-02-15 20:53:00 In the instance of a club I would go with the shortest possible domain name like tbuc.org.nz for example. sal (67)
