fixing a work colleague's PC, it's an NEC L1000e PowerMate desktop.

On startup get the above mentioned BSOD error message. Have looked it up and MS says it could be device driver issue.

Problem is I can't even log into safe mode at all, the PC just hangs after a few minutes.

I have tried setting the BIOS back to factory defaults but this hasn't worked at all. The installed BIOS is the latest available.

Also tried MS suggestions from their website on how to fix but no luck yet.

I can get into Recovery Console fine... just trying to sus out the next move.

I was wondering... the motherboard in this PC is a Gigabyte GA-8S661FM... can I use the Gigabyte bios file to update the BIOS at all... I know it will overwirte the proprietary NEC BIOS but theoretically it should work?

I should also mention that I replaced the PSU in this unit last week after it got fried when his wife unplugged the power cord from the wall socket? I got the PC working fine witout issue after replacing the PSU though.. so I'm not to sure what's going on here.

Any suggestions...

857696 2010-02-12 21:02:00 What version of windows? People were reporting that one of the updates from last week were causing their systems to crash. (KB977165). Has it been crashing since the updates last week, or before they came out? Its possible KB977165 maybe the cause, since that brings up a 000007E stop error. 857698 2010-02-12 21:15:00 Try this for XP. It may work for other OS"s

1. Boot from your Windows XP CD and start the recovery console. You may need to press F6 while RC loads in order to load SATA drivers; you will then have a c:\WINDOWS console prompt.

2. Type: CD $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst (this is the update I had to uninstall to get out of the boot loop, other updates may be uninstalled by changing the directory name to $NtUninstallKBCODE$, where KBCODE is the KB code)

3. Type: BATCH spuninst.txt

4. Type: exit

857699 2010-02-12 21:17:00 Dont worry about flashing the BIOS , more than likely wont do any good.

You can always run system restore back to before the problem began Via the recovery console,(unless its really screwed) that may fix it to at least a working system again.

857702 2010-02-19 01:22:00 Easiest fix for that is to run chkdsk /p /r at boot, and occasionally you may need to do a repair install, but 98% of the time the chkdsk fixes it. pctek (84)
857703 2010-02-20 09:20:00 I too have been caught by this rootkit, and have spent ages on the phone with MS in the Philipines. He suggested installing and running Malwarebytes, which found and removed 6 trojans. I tried, under guidance , to do a repair with the xp disc, but you can press "R" as often as you like but it does nothing. Any ideas?
I was supposed to get a call back yesterday from the tech, but was out most of the time and no message left.
I have a dualboot system with Vista Home Premium on the second drive, so am not without use of a PC.
I can access the xp drive from my computer in vista and wondered if there is any way to do a system restore of xp. Hopefully I can get back a week, before the infection, if only I can find a way to do it.
