857655 2010-02-12 12:56:00 Hey all

So today when I booted my computer, I noticed MSSE all the text except for some, I think just "Microsoft security essentials" and the date in time. I sometimes see this in games when someone's name is squares and my mate sees them as, say Chinese letters. But I just ignored that because I couldn't read them anyway.

But with Microsoft Security essentials it's a bit different because I can't read anything except the things I said above.

Basically looks something like this (www.imagef1.net.nz)

Ooh..

Yeah uninstalling then reinstalling and I get the same thing

857660 2010-02-12 22:44:00 This is most likely a font problem (have you changed your desktop font to an unusual one, one that doesn't have a full character set (so cant display all possible characters so shows a non-character (a 'square'))), or have you added or deleted any fonts from your font directory that may be the defaults for Windows? Could also be corrupted files in that directory.

Have you installed any language packs?

857662 2010-02-12 23:53:00 Hi Feersumendjinn.

I haven't touched any language options.

And yes, MSSE

857663 2010-02-13 01:46:00 From the screenshot, your language settings are not set to English (New Zealand). The date format is not the one that would be displayed, so the first thing I'd suggest is going to Control Panel, find the Regional Options, and change to English (New Zealand). Then do a reboot and see if that fixed Security Essentials.

If that doesn't work, my guess is you have a non-English version of Security Essentials, and the characters of that language (Japanese for example) are showing as squares. To fix that, I would go to the Security Essential website (www.microsoft.com) , and make sure the download you are getting is the English one. Do this by choosing Locales and Languages, and make sure English is selected on the left. Then uninstall and reinstall using the newly downloaded English language version.

I'd be interested to know if you get it working. :)

cheers

Another clue is the date in the screenshot is not the way you'd expect for NZ?

Haha, well. I went back to the MSSE download page, and what do you know, for some reason the language was set to chinese, I just never noticed it the first time. Thanks
