Its not a backup disk.
When you say you tried "all the f buttons", did you actually press/hold the function key F3 (at the top of the keyboard), while the laptop is restarting/booting?

857970 2010-02-13 22:15:00 thanks ok so i download the right version follow the instructios to burn it to a disk the put it in the laptop set first boot to disk then follow the prompts to restore windows is this correct and will this format the hdd for me or will it just fix the thing that is stopping it from starting smithinator (15240)
857971 2010-02-13 22:18:00 It is a repair disc not a reinstall disc.
(it's not a copy of Vista, just the repair tools from it!)
KarameaDave (15222)
857972 2010-02-13 22:19:00 Its only the recovery console / repair section of Vista, it WONT reinstall windows.

You may be able to wind the system back using system Restore from it, or get it to reboot normally.

For the Recovery partition - also try Alt+F10 or Alt+F11 on start up.
