And a video here: www.youtube.com

Is it just me, or do the RAM sticks look like they're twice as high as normal sticks of RAM?

761676 2009-04-02 00:33:00 Interesting. Good thing the article was posted after lunch yesterday...

The RAM sticks are quite high. May just be heatspreaders?

761677 2009-04-02 01:29:00 Interestingly enough you've been able to buy a Google Machine for quite some time now though:

The search appliances are different - they are just standard 1U servers, whereas the ones they use in their datacentres are specially designed and built.

They appear to have an extra row of chips on them - I wonder whether these are available to normal consumers, or if they're a special Google-only thing?

Not quite the same thing - those are self-contained search systems, and don't use the same hardware as their DC ones.

761681 2009-04-02 02:22:00 I think its a joke, 2 drives?.....random search performance would be shocking.... SolMiester (139)

2 drives per server, 20+ servers per cabnet.
50+ cabnets per data center.....

it called a cluster......
many computer can act as one and run very fast.

761683 2009-04-02 03:36:00 Especially if they're all SSD's like that recent Samsung RAID article :D Chilling_Silence (9)

Are you trying to tell me 50+ servers with the same info?...LOL, load balancing perhaps, that doesnt help with random access speed though, least not on my servers.
