But anyway, it is a national disgrace that a so-called 'first world country' does not have a National Ambulance Service such as in the UK run by the NHS. Instead we rely on various poorly subsidised, undermanned, volunteer local services dependent mainly on charity and fund raising to keep going. In the UK St John Ambulance does not run a frontline ambulance service as such, it provides services at public events, sports events etc, and is the main first aid training organisation. It does get called out in emergency situations like floods, disasters, and accidents etc, and as it says they play a crucial role in supporting emergency services, but the national service is the front line. www.sja.org.uk |
