| 858313 | 2010-02-14 07:35:00 | My Dell Dimension 8300 PSU has died. (non of the 4 indicators at rear are lit). I've read a few articles that suggested that Dell didn't use standard power supplies. Does anyone know if this is so? I was just going to get a stock power supply from local store, but thought I'd better check 1st. |

| 858316 | 2010-02-14 21:22:00 | No, its not the same as in teh link image. It opens up like a suitcase. Doesn't have SATA. Its 80GB IDE, 2.8 ghz P4, GeForce FX5200, WIndows XP . The irony is that I was planning to replace it, but need to get it live to ease transfer of stuff.:help: |

Aside from the many different form-factors (some of which are proprietary), the electrical connectors are often different. Some PSUs use proprietary connectors that nobody else uses (IBM have done this before) Or in Dell's case, they like to use standard ATX PSU form factor, and the exact same plugs but with a different electrical pinout The only way to know if a Dell PSU is non-standard is to do some research into it First thing is check the PSU label, if it lists each wire colour and the corresponding function (5vSB, PS_ON, -12v, etc etc) then just compare these with a normal ATX PSU (sometimes the colours aren't the same, but don't worry about that) Provided everything is electrically in the same place, you can use a normal ATX supply as a replacement, and vice-versa. |

The label only gave the specs, not the wiring colour etc. However with the info on it I bought a gigabyte ATX power supply that's done the trick, although the HDD power cable is a bit short for the Dell clamshell design. Only trouble now is that one of my disks isn't recognised. But that's another story. | Yorky (15628) | ||
