763115 2009-04-08 05:59:00 I have, in the last 6 months or so, received a number of unsolicited electronic messages (via email) from NZ companies, which appear to have scraped the WHOIS registry to obtain my (real) name and email address.

I have gone to lengths to try and find out who is behind all this, having made numerous phone calls to try and track down the source. I am trying to get independent confirmation of this at the moment, but it appears that a local company may be selling email lists to unsuspecting small business owners. I won't name this company at this stage, until I have confirmation from another business that this same source of email addresses is being used. In any case, these small businesses should not be sending mail to email lists, when they cannot verify that the recipients have given implied or explicit consent.

Here's what I'm thinking - since PressF1 gets exceptionally good search rankings from Google, we should set up a name and shame thread documenting (local) companies which have either sent spam, or are suspected of supplying lists of email addresses.

What do you think? Moderators: will something like this be ok?

763118 2009-04-08 06:07:00 By naming and shaming, I don't mean providing a link - that would kind of defeat the purpose. I was referring to just naming the companies themselves. somebody (208)
763119 2009-04-08 06:18:00 If it is from a NZ company I just send them back a msg saying that if I get anymore I will report them and send along a link to the Govt Bill (www.parliament.nz) that forbids it.

I normally get back an apology fairly promptly.

763120 2009-04-08 06:20:00 The Direct Marketing Association might want to hear about this too...

Chances are the perpetrators aren't members, but they might want to follow up anyway.

Why not just use spam filters in your Email client(s) and/or accounts?

763124 2009-04-15 00:14:00 I have (finally) been able to get confirmation from a second company which has sent me spam, that they have purchased an email list from a NZ firm, which they were promised contained 1) business email address, 2) email address of people who had given permission for their addresses to be given to a 3rd party.

Both companies which sent spam to me apologised profusely for sending the messages, and were co-operative in providing me with information about where they sourced their email lists. They had both received plenty of abuse from other email recipients by the time I called.

The company selling the email lists is Image Marketing Group Ltd, also known as "Image", or "Image Marketing". If you are a business considering buying lists from them, be warned that they contain addresses for people who have not given permission to receive them.
