858780 2010-02-15 20:26:00 Convinced myself that Adobe was just getting far too big and bloated so switched to Foxit (again - tried and rejected earlier).

Now I am not so sure. Foxit is just too pushy and sneaky with its almost forceware. Installed it onto a friend's machine but the second day after he had the whole damn trial paid-for suite installed, including the bloody ASK toolbar! I just feel too uneasy with these buggers.

Anything else?? Come back Adobe, all is forgiven? Yes, I know, you still have to dodge the ASK toolbar on installation but at least they don't push it at every update.

Frankly, I don't like either but one has to have a reader.

858781 2010-02-15 20:35:00 Thats why its got a custom install. If you dont select it, ASK toolbar WILL install. I've never had any probs. The only time anything in it will install, is when I select it Speedy Gonzales (78)
858782 2010-02-15 20:40:00 Agree with SG re foxit - just do a custom install, untick the rubbish and go.

I've installed it on literally hundreds of machines and never had anyone want to actually go back to Acrobat Reader...

858783 2010-02-15 20:42:00 Sumatra PDF (blog.kowalczyk.info) hands down for me. It's only 1.4 MB of portable, open source freeware and over the years it has opened every PDF I've thrown at it no problem. sal (67)
858784 2010-02-15 20:48:00 anyone tried Pokatreader

http://www.pokat.com/

I like the flip style (with a widesreen monitor), but I haven't got around to using it or trying it, on ye olde to do list

858785 2010-02-15 21:05:00 I dropped Adobe some time back and I use Foxit. I like the search over multiple PDFs for one thing. Sweep (90)
858786 2010-02-15 21:10:00 It's not the first install that is the problem. I know how to untick a box. The problem is when it does an auto update and presents a naive user with options they don't understand, like, install every damn thing but in not so many words. If I am supporting someone I don't need the crap installs I have just seen.

Thanks Sal and Nigel. I will look at these. Pokat looks interesting.

858787 2010-02-15 21:21:00 Updates in Foxit are turned on by default. When you install why not just turn off this feature?

I know how if you need or want to know.

858788 2010-02-15 22:12:00 I've never seen it autoupdate. If they dont know what it is, dont select it. Simple Speedy Gonzales (78)
858789 2010-02-15 22:25:00 Open Foxit > Help > Check for updates > Advanced > Untick the auto update box.

So easy as the OP knows how to untick a box.
