859791 2010-03-24 20:49:00 Forgot to mention, I now have a new project;- get the Gigabyte GA-M68SM-S2L motherboard working again with the original F3 BIOS back in place.
Shouldn't be too difficult

859792 2010-03-24 22:25:00 I know Win 7 x64 can cause probs (on some systems), when you install it.

On the older/other PC here, it'd let me press a key to boot from the CD, BUT after after it rebooted the 1st time, (after you format the hdd), it hung on the post screen (after detecting the hdd I had installed it on). I thought it was the hdd, BUT every other OS installed fine.

I had a feeling, it had something to do with this stupid 100 mb partition, so I started all over again. So, I made the partitions bigger, (so it couldnt create the partition). And this time it worked. At the mo, I've dual booted it with Windows 2000 (they're using the same hdd / partitioned into 2 40 GB partitions (C, and E). So it shouldnt matter, WHAT the letter is for the OS (Win7 on this is E (not C).

You wont find a lot of x86 programs, that wont work with x64 (unless they use a x86 driver). The only thing, you have to look out for are device drivers (for x64). No x64 drivers, then you cant use it

859793 2010-03-26 01:44:00 Hi Speedy, yes it certainly was a marathon and a frustrating one 'til it worked.
Yeah, that 100MB System Reserved Partition in 32 & 64 Bit W7 was new to me. I'd never seen it before in XP nor had I seen it in Disk Management on the 32Bit W7. Maybe because when I had installed W7 X86 from boot I hadn't performed all those Delete Partitions, Create New and Format. I had formatted the HDD to NTFS using Gparted to create the Disk0 Partition2 on the Sata HDD and the 80GB IDE ATA HDD. I just chose X64 and tried installing to the Disk0 Partition2. Or to Disk0 Partition1 ( C drive).
Whatever I tried it wasn't gonna play ball.
I had read what you say about making the partions large so there wasn't any room for the 100MB partition to be created or how Extending the partition that the install was intended to be sent would incorporate into it,the 100MB System Reserved partition.
It was resolved using a new AM3 mobo and bios and a couple of new drive sata/ide ribbon cables and an incorrigible spirit ( which within me is comprised of stubborness and stupidity, the terrible twins).
A bit of digging about for knowledge made me realise that the 100MB System Reserved partition is the Bootmgr ( I think) and that the Bootmgr for both 32 & 64 Bit W7 OS's is the same..............A second 100MB partition was not necessary for 64 bit.........and that W7 can be dual booted, as long as the 32 Bit is the First on the HDD. I knew dual boot was possible.
Why did I want D-boot? to keep that which I had and knew while I checked out program compatibilities with 64 Bit. The only issue that I have had thus far is that Trojan Remover is not 64 Bit compatible....yet.
I haven't tried to instal many apps yet...take it slow.
What I did notice that 64 Bit does run some 32 Bit programs and sometimes 64 Bit would perform better. But the programs do run.
An interesting thing I noticed is this: opening C drive (at the mo its 64 Bit) I see that there are two entries for Program Files. One is Program Files, the other is Program Files (x86) and during installation of a program/app I have the option to instal to either. I could be wrong, it might not happen all the time.
Thanks Speedy, much obliged.
I have googled the BIOS burnout possible fix of my other mobo and there are mentions of replacing the chip(the ones on my mobo don't plug into a socket), but the interesting advice was about loading the BIOS of the mobo to a CD and booting from it, BUT, the optical drive had to be Sata. Didn't work otherwise.
Wondering on that one because I think, how is anything going to boot anything when nothing is booting at all................know what I mean
 :banana

ps: I'll look thru my bookmarks later and will post for consideration, the info on the Sata optical drive BIOS repair.
ciao 4 now

859794 2010-03-26 02:10:00 You probably wont see the 100 mb partition, (this is for bitlocker),since its hidden. And its system reserved. So, you cant use it anyway. 64 bit programs will work faster than 32 bit. You're right trojan remover will install, BUT it isnt 64 bit compat YET (it says this on the site). BUT, will be later this year, which was confirmed by the guys who made it (when I sent them an email a few mths ago), asking that very ?

The program files folder is for 64 bit apps, the x86 for 32 bit apps. Thats how 64 bit can run 32 bit apps. You dont have the option to install to either. If its 64 bit, it'll install to program files, if 32 bit the x86 folder.

You'll also notice if you go into task manager, the 32 bit programs will show there (they'll have a *32 beside them)
