763759 2009-04-12 01:21:00 Lose your hearing and it puts a serious crimp in your ability to interact with others - how would you use the phone, for instance?

My sister has lost her hearing (genetic, not loud music), and finds it very frustrating trying to communicate with hearing people . Don't take your hearing for granted - as FoxyMX has said, once it's gone, it's gone .

Many people who become deaf become quite introverted and mix almost solely with others with the same disability . Nothing wrong with that per se, but it does impose a serious limit on social interaction . It takes a LOT of effort for a totally deaf person to interact with the hearing world .

Getting back to the original topic - I don't believe it is illegal to drive with earphones in (and music playing), but it is extremely unwise .

I can't count how many dumb joggers I have nearly hit crossing the road, because they're so zoned-out of reality, listening to their iPod (probably trying to drown out the pain of their running) that they don't look when reaching the kerb . . . Same scenario can be applied to motor vehicle drivers (or cyclists) listening to music via earphones while carrying out a non-music related activity .

There are add-ons for most car stereos/iPods that enable listening to the iPod via the car speakers . Not expensive either .

763760 2009-04-12 01:28:00 there are bt its 90 for a cable for my stereo that is after uve spent 500 for the single piece of the radio its self lol mcw33 (14812)
763761 2009-04-12 01:30:00 I'm not talking about a cable. I understand there are (low-powered) FM transmitters that plug onto the bottom of your iPod - you then tune your car radio to the appropriate frequency and listen that way... johcar (6283)

763763 2009-04-14 05:58:00 Loss of hearing can be good and bad.
I had hearing tests about 20 years ago and they established that both my inner ears are shot from driving heavy earth moving equipment many years ago and operating chainsaws etc. There were no ear protection around back then. I think the V16 Diesel with no muffler had a lot to do with it over 12 hr shifts and several months.

When I really want to hear something I have to be close and concentrate, but when wife is talking I can very easily miss 99% of what she says, which is a blessing at times.

I a room with a few people all talking at once I don't have a hope of hearing a one on one conversation, or if there is music in the room.

I wouldn't worry about because there is no law saying you cant drive with an earphone on.
You could wear a stereo headset or even a top hat with a flashing light (not blue) on it in the car if the roof height allowed it.
They allow deaf people to drive.
A cop could say chewing gum and driving is breaking the law, matter of fact they can say anything whether you believe it is another thing.
I am almost deaf as a post caused by duckshooting, claytarget rifle shooting loud bands in my single days and Pink Floyd get you filthy hands off my desert and the song Gloria at max throttle when drunk.

Yes the police could could charge you for picking your nose, if that is causing you to drive dangerously, and causing you not to concentrate fully on the road . However having an earbud placed in your ear that isn't even playing any music, and driving in a safe responsibile way, shouldn't have been a reason for the officer to tell me a lie, unless he wasn't fully trained in the law . Instead he could have just said that they don't recommend driving with earbuds in, and if it is shown to have casue a nusiense that they could take it further . It doesn't win them any friends from law abiding citizens, when you can't trust what they say . Instead they should be picking up these real estate agents who oftn have the mobile phone glued to their ear, while weaving around the road in a dangerous manner . Had one today that I had to honk at to get them to concentrate on the road .
