| 762749 | 2009-04-07 00:11:00 | I have found atheists to be the least tolerant of other peoples' beliefs - they are usually quite smug and superior and seem to think that there is something fantastic about the human ability to reason - and that their belief proves that they are reasoning better than most. As far as forgiveness goes, it is not a matter of simply deciding not to hate somebody who has wronged you. What do you mean by forgiveness? Since when did a group of athiests get together and make war? en.wikipedia.org Since when have you had an athiest knock on your door and try to convert you to his/her belief? A zealot seems to be a person that may have a one track mind and pushes it to the limit much like WMG was or even I at times for that matter. dictionary.reference.com As to forgiveness we are told to forgive and forget which to me means you tolerate the behaviour of others no matter how much this may impact on you and your family. Turn the other cheek so the person can hit you on the other side? Not for me! |

| 762750 | 2009-04-07 00:36:00 | It's never (until recent times - the last 20 years or so) been politically prudent to declare oneself an atheist (I am, BTW). So asking when a "group of atheists got together and made war" is not a very well phrased question. Any given historical group (war-mongers or not) was made up of all kinds of different people with different beliefs, including, probably, a few closet atheists. There are a multitude of causes/reasons for war - every nation that goes to war uses one or more justification for killing their neighbours: "For king and country", "Patriotic duty", our-god-is-better-than-their-god, they-don't-believe-in-our-god, they're-sinners-and-our-god-will-save-the-survivors, land, oil, gold, slaves, power... [PJ, you're a stirrer! :D] |

The US was motivated to enter a disastrous war in Vietnam based on a secular hatred of communism - and they ostracised people in their own society during the McCarthy era - again, nothing to do with religion. |

Er, I think there is something wrong with your reasoning there Deane, atheism is the absence of belief. Therefore their absence of belief cannot prove they are reasoning better than most. Edit: since roddy has corrected grammar, let's correct the post heading......"cynical" :) |

Atheism is the belief there is no god/creator/deities/Spaghetti Monster.Quite different from a lack of belief. Personally I'm agnostic, which makes me superiour to both sides that claim to know the real story. Has anyone seen the size of the universe recently?, we are nothing, Tiny little specks of life that exist for a heartbeat on a tiny little rock floating around an insignificant sun in the middle of nowhere. |
