Easter coincides with Spring in the Northern Hemisphere - a time of rebirth, therefore eggs (a traditional symbol of birth/fertility) are associated with the torture of a man 2000-odd years ago (if you are an adherent to that story, that is). johcar (6283)

Many of the world's crucified godmen have their traditional birthday on December 25th . This is because the ancients recognized that (from an earthcentric perspective) the sun makes an annual descent southward until December 21st or 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops moving southerly for three days and then starts to move northward again .

A number of pagan mystery religions, such as those of Osiris, Dionysus, Attis, And Mithras, were all manifestations of a single cult of a dying and rising "godman" myth, whom they call Osiris-Dionysus .
* Osiris-Dionysus is God made flesh, the savior and "Son of God . "
* His father is God and his mother is a mortal virgin, 7 month pregnancy .
* He is born in a cave or humble cowshed on December 25 before three shepherds .
* He offers his followers the chance to be born again through the rites of baptism .
* He dies at Eastertime as a sacrifice for the sins of the world .
* After his death he descends to hell, then on the third day he rises from the dead and ascends to heaven in glory .
* His followers await his return as the judge during the Last Days .

According to The Jesus Mysteries, Christianity originated as a Judaized version of the pagan mystery religions . Hellenized Jews wrote a version of the godman myth incorporating Jewish elements .

Eggs, like rabbits and hares, are fertility symbols of extreme antiquity . Since birds lay eggs and rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth at the Vernal Equinox .

The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre .

763674 2009-04-11 07:36:00 It doesn't come until Sunday.

Not necessarily... when we have Grandaughter on the Thursday night of Easter, the Easter Bunny has to come then. We explain it to her as such.. "He is a very busy rabbit and does Napier on Thursday nights and then does Hastings on Saturday nights"

Necessity is the mother of invention!

We had a faster paced calendar when I was a nipper; we had "an uproarious festival " every Friday night.

The calendar I followed included an uproarious Saturday night as well as the Friday night...

In fact, sometimes the two nights blurred into each other (daylight savings at its most efficient)...
