763377 2009-04-09 02:05:00 How do you know if your CV is set out in the way they like??

There are a lot of (differing) guidelines, but the general rule is this: Employers receive heaps of CVs, so if yours can't make a good impression in 20 seconds, it won't be read beyond the first page. It's that simple.

It needs to look professional, tell the employer enough about you to give them an incentive to keep reading, and highlight why they should hire you over someone else.

There's a reasonably good CV builder at www.gradconnection.co.nz - in my opinion the CVs their tool generates are far too long, but the structure is good, and the tool forces you to think about a number of things you might not think of when writing a CV. My recommendation is that you use that tool to generate a CV, then follow the structure but cut it down to about 3-4 pages max.

763379 2009-04-11 23:57:00 Lang is your first step. Crap that up, don't even think of it being read by the employer.

Try it if not successful, go for lower jobs or maybe even in that industry but doing non PC work just to show you are keen and stuff for the next step up ....... Once the lang is great, next is that they want experience over what fantastic grades you have etc. Unless of course you get head hunted :D

Not sure of the PC jobs but for most, you meet a criteria, then you either get shortlisted or you don't. Then they interview you and they discuss your pros and cons after doing telephone interview. The best is chosen who may not have the best pros over cons. It sometimes may be a organisational fit, maybe too senior, maybe too confident, maybe a language barrier when they interviewed you, or good that the candidate is a good fit to the current team.

I think that inevitably if you are not head hunted, a lack of experience is gonna be a barrier. I myself have worked at lower jobs to get the breakthrough and then stay there for sometime to build that asset up.
