| 764299 | 2009-04-12 17:41:00 | I just realised that New Zealand is different to overseas. While places overseas tend to open their shop thru easter New Zealand has a law that fines people if they open their outlets but why? Shouldn't they get to choose? Easter is a good day to do shopping don't you think? |

| 764301 | 2009-04-12 20:11:00 | I think it has something to do with heritage, and Christianity (how the vast majority of the early immigrants were Roman Catholic/Protestant/etc) Shoppers get a good deal now lol At HN (where I work) we are open 362 days of the year, the only days we are closed are Christmas Day, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday Quite funny, we had a woman ring the store blasting us because we were shutting at 5.30 on Thursday night (usual late night), and blasting us because we were shut on Friday as well :waughh: |

| 764303 | 2009-04-13 00:23:00 | Normally I work Sunday, but had to work Saturday instead and work even latter on Thursday night. Makes no difference to me if they're open or not, just means Thurs/Sat are hectic. |

Not really as you aren't forcing them to work.I'm sure there are people who wants double pay and willing to work for easter. Everyone are having their holiday and its the best time to earn money but there's a law saying you'll get fine. Find it a bit stupid really. |

By law its time and a half plus day in lieu. As for forcing people to work... some companies are pretty persuasive (come to work, or catch ya kind of thing) especially if you not fulltime |

| 764306 | 2009-04-13 07:03:00 | Its the law. Cant trust bosses ( I am one) they would effectively be forcing staff to work like volunteer or get layed off, sort of constructive dismissal. Its pressure to work that cant be measured. I get charters over Easter and sometimes I have to grovel to get drivers for them. Once I had to buy a 50 litre keg of beer for a drivers daughters 21st. NZ is predominately a Christian country of British stock and the holiday results from that. People need to show some respect to local laws and culture. Even show some respect to staff (I know thats pushing it a bit) by giving them time off. I am glad the labor dept is hot on chasing the clowns who open best to stop the rot before it takes hold. |

New Zealand closing for Easter has nothing to do with religion really, USA is more religious than New Zealand and they all go to work on the Friday and Monday. The whole protecting workers thing is a nonsense, you can argue that same line for any day of the year. Shops should be able to open at Easter if they want to, and make whatever arrangements they want to with their staff. Bad employers won't keep good staff, simple as that. |
