I feel sorry for the average citizens of Fiji, who have had to put up with 3 (???) coups in recent decades.

Yeah, at the end of the day it's their own country that is losing - tourists stay away, no businesses will invest there, the infrastructure will collapse .
I worked in Fiji for about 2 months last year, and three months in 2007 . Most locals I spoke to agree they've had enough of the coups, and most people think that you shouldn't get rid of a democratically elected government by having a coup if you don't like them! That's the whole idea of democracy - the majority of the popular vote decides who rules! And if you don't like them, well, that's a shame, but that's democracy .
The only way I would ever advocate a coup is if there was a bad abuse of power or corruption in government .
When I was there, I lost count of the number of people who would ask me about how they could get a job in New Zealand (as they knew I was from here) and I know they think the same about Australia too . Fiji simply can't afford to lose this number of educated people overseas .

763892 2009-04-11 06:35:00 The reason for the coups is to stop at all costs Indians getting any power over the Fijians.
The army is amost 100% Fijians and the coups will keep coming from now to eternity.
