765845 2009-04-17 00:31:00 Although my surname is Green, I am sick of the Green's campaign on plastic bags.

I recycle them, in that I use them to put other things in. They are very thin and do not take up much room in landfills, and they are so thin these days that they decompose quite easily.

If you are worried about plastic in landfills what about ?
Softdrink bottles - huge
Butter containers
Supermarket doughnut and cake plastic bubbles
Motor vehicle oil bottles - thick strong plastic
Milk bottles
Detergent containers

I could go on and on.

765846 2009-04-17 00:39:00 If they fail to convince people to stop using plastic bags which are thin and more easily decomposable, imagine trying to convince people to stop using products contained by the things you've listed.

Besides, they don't decompose as easily as you might think. They can take from a couple of years up to a 1000 to decompose. And when they decompose toxic stuff goes into the ground, then to river, then to sea.....

765848 2009-04-17 01:41:00 When I was a boy, or even older, there were no such things as plastic bags, in fact there were hardly any, if any, plastic products or packaging, there was Bakelite and cellulose products like cellophane and similar.

Sidecar windscreens were made of Celluloid.........as were cheap motorcycle goggles.

Instead we had brown paper bags, paper carrier bags, brown paper for wrapping goods in.
Cheese was cut off blocks and wrapped in white paper as were other foods from the grocers. Nothing was pre-packed in plastic.

Go to the hardware shop, buy some nails or screws...yes they were put in a paper bag, or wrapped up in paper.

Every street had a pig-bin where vegetable waste was put for pig feed.

We had rag and bone men with horses and carts (like Steptoe) who collected most other recyclable mainly metal wastes.

765849 2009-04-17 02:10:00 When I worked part time for a plastic importer recently, I found out that the resins (e.g polypropylene) are relatively cheap, easy to source , mold, manufacture, and to advertise. Perhaps the petroleum companies should be targeted by the Greens about the recyclable use of plastics... kahawai chaser (3545)

Exactly. People were just fine before plastic bags and packaging.

765851 2009-04-17 02:32:00 I agree - dump plastic bags and go back to paper. At least paper supermarket bags stand up in the boot, and they are recyclable and made from something we have got plenty of in NZ: trees johcar (6283)

You mean like leaving the supermarket with paper bags and having the bottom fallout before you get to the car?? Your most likely too young to remember that .. I'm glad we get the plastic bags and like the OP we also reuse them

I've had many plastic supermarket bags rip open

The new square green-coloured ones are probably the best, you only have to buy them once and it saves plastic and trees. And they don't rip at all

Hang about, we didn't have cars in the brown paper bag days, we used to put the paper wrapped goods into shopping bags and carry them home on foot , bicycle or bus
