765433 2009-04-16 03:59:00 For those who keep having problems with that M$ nonsense called WGA, here is the latest on how to bypass it from Windows Secrets (www.windowssecrets.com) on the topic.

extract....."Microsoft's system for validating Windows before users can download most updates continues to be a problem for legitimate customers and for Internet security as a whole."

Best solution of all is to exterminate WGA and GAV from Windows completely

Then it wont install it, unless you install it

765435 2009-04-16 04:07:00 That goes for Office Genuine Advantage, too.

Had to get rid of that rubbish for a user last week, very upset that Uncle Bill has labelled her a thief because she dared to run Office 2003.

765436 2009-04-16 04:09:00 Most (90% at least) of the problems I have seen on customers machines is because they have Illegal (stolen/Pirated) software installed.

Like a business I went to today - 4 PC's all with a known Pirated office 2003 - then complaining that office wouldn't work. Gee wonder why:rolleyes:

PS: 4 Legal copies of Office arriving tomorrow.

Edited:

If you have the legal COA theres no problems, and easy to fix.

765437 2009-04-16 04:20:00 Genuine install. The machines that "friends" have worked on are pretty easy to spot - and a good source of income/amusement. Peterj116 (6762)
765438 2009-04-16 04:34:00 Had a customer's machine in the workshop the other day with the same problem.
Microsoft saying that their copy of Windows XP was illegal bla bla bla.
Checked the key that used on the current install and it matched the key on the COA sticker on the top of the case!
WGA removed

765439 2009-04-16 05:14:00 We've had Office Genuine Advantage popup on one of the family laptops. I know its legit, I was with them when they purchased the darn thing and its only been installed on that one laptop.

Problem: MS also pushes IE8 etc through Windows Update. I wanna turn it off completely, but know that's just asking for trouble.
Question: Is there a way to do security-only updates? Not "feature" or "bugfix" updates?

Don't do express, I forget what the other option is, but then you can pick and choose

765441 2009-04-16 05:53:00 You don't have to be a pirate to get labelled as non-genuine by WGA, which is what got it such a bad name

What's even funnier, I sometimes use a non-genuinely-activated windows for doing hardware/software/update tests (before I install them on my main PC to ensure they don't do anything strange) and I was told it was 100% legitimate.

WGA is just another unneeded headache...

765442 2009-04-16 06:03:00 hey Chill - if you want to stop IE8 auto downloading simply go to This MS Download (www.microsoft.com) - run the tool and IE8 will not auto install.

In the future if you want to install IE8 you have to download the install, or get it from one of the Magazine CD's. It will still install Via the exe/msi.
