765279 2009-04-15 22:22:00 Just wondering where I might find any stats about Auckland and how many people of the various ethnicities are living in Auckland.

Anyone know?

And in case you were wondering why;

I see Maori in Auckland are jumping up and down demanding 3 seats in the new Supercity Council.
My opinion being, do it the usual way and get voted on... or give them the 3 seats, but then also give Asians 4 seats, Pacific Islanders 3 seats, etc etc; as a fair representation of the ethnicities in Auckland.

765283 2009-04-16 01:15:00 If representation was based on the percentage of prison population, instead of general population, they'd be running the city.

Representation, like respect, should be given on merit and performance.

Just sayin'.....

I agree with you in general but:-

If we take this to a logical conclusion then a council should be formed of an equal number of Males/Females and also since the major population population consists of people under 30 then perhaps they get a seat as of right.

In my view any person has the right to stand for Council (Local) or in fact Central Government for that matter regardless of ethnicity. If a large number of the general public can't be bothered to get off their tail end and actually vote as happenend in the last General election then they get what they did not vote for. Even those that did vote in the last election possibly got a result they were not expecting.

765285 2009-04-16 01:52:00 I was just in central Auckland beside the Town Hall. About a dozen reporters plus camera crew looked like TV One there and I think I saw Rodney Hyde and John Banks among the people going into Town Hall. Outside talking to reporters were TWO protesters.

By the time I left about 40 minutes later the protesters were up to 4.

Going by the signs they had looks like a lot of protesters did not turn up, but the signs were protesting Super City. I guess they had nothing else to do today.

765286 2009-04-16 02:07:00 I think the maoris should get representation on the council maybe 2 instead of 3.
Otherwise there is going to be ****fight probably not worth the hassle especially if Maori Party and National party end their parties arrangements. The labor party would be the only one to benefit from a ****fight.
I think Mr Key will sort something out over the head of Rodney Hide.
I cant see how having maoris on a super council will be to my detriment.
