765347 2009-04-15 23:19:00 Aaaah, my old home town from 45 years ago! Have looked on as to what has been happening there with disbelief ever since.

IMHO Auckland is the cause of its own misfortunes. Empire building, infighting, egomaniacs.... it has had them all. Anytime a Mayor/Council has wanted to invest in infrastructure, the ratepayers have screamed - "what about the cost"?

What is possibly about to happen soon, should have happened years ago. The people should have listened to Robbie and put in his proposed rapid rail. Kept the trams and ignored the bleating motorists who moaned about having to stop all the time for them. Retain and extend the ferry system.

Instead, they built motorways for the motorists to block up. Thiswas a big factor in destroying all the above transport systems.

I moved to Napier which is about 15K from Hastings. Doubled up systems, services and bloody pariochial... bugger

765348 2009-04-15 23:31:00 Banksy is probably only supporting the Super Mayor/Super City concept because he thinks he will be the next super mayor with super powers, it's going to his head.

If the Mayoral system was as weak as it is in UK, where they are mainly just decorative figureheads, and many cities have no mayor at all, I wonder if he would be so keen.

Edit: "One of Ken Livingstone’s favourite anecdotes is a remark made to him by the Mayor of Moscow that Ken’s powers as Mayor were so weak that his counterpart in Russia had greater influence even under Stalin’s rule."

765350 2009-04-15 23:56:00 I think Paul Homes has it in the bag even if he is stink pilot and a smoker followed closely by Banksy.
Harvey, Brown and that clown from the shore have as much chance as a snowflake in hell thats why they are whinging. If you left it to the mayors of Auckland to merge they would muck around and defer the change to infinity plus a million years.
Strong central government by the National and Act has taken the bull by the horns and sorted it out quickly.
Well done Mr Key and Rodney. Mayor is only a figurehead he has only one vote on the council.
I particularly despise Harvey in my area but he still gets in gods knows why. He would have been a mayor pushing a zimmerframe if this hadn't happened. I am ecstatic he is toast, on his bike, outta there, gone burger.

One city one council one mayor just like the rest of NZ.

That's how it is at the moment. Waitakere, Manukau, North Shore, Rodney, Auckland, etc, are all separate cities. I don't think people appreciate how completely over populated the greater Auckland "area" is. That's why separate cities were formed. e.g. Waitakere residents have little in common with Auckland city residents. I live in Waitakere, and we continually get lumped in as stereotypical Aucklanders by outsiders, which couldn't be further from the truth. We don't even use the word "Auckland" in the postal address, it's Waitakere xxxx, NZ. Like all the other cities in the isthmus, Waitakere has grown so large.

I wouldn't be keen for Banks in particular (or any of the others) to obtain any more power or vocality than they already have. I'd like a rationalization of the rates though. I have no need to go into Auckland, and yet have to subsidize their city planning.

765352 2009-04-16 10:38:00 Get rid of the minor councils & all the half dead people that work there. One super council. John Banks / Chairman Mao , all for one & one for himself. Time to move I think lol Phil B (648)
