765057 2009-04-14 12:40:00 Am going to get braces soon and have been looking around for a suitable orthodontist, the price seems to vary greatly, and I also from further research it seems that some orthodontists have only studied dentistry in university, while some are fully qualified to be an orthodontist with an orthodontistry degree.

Its also worth noting that the less qualified orthodontists generally offer cheaper prices than the higher qualified ones, which makes sense, but I am unsure whether or not this will make a difference.

Can anyone who has had experience with getting braces etc please advise me on this? Looking for a reliable, well priced orthodontist in the Auckland area, preferably Central/East Auckland.

Cheers:)

765059 2009-04-14 20:50:00 I doubt there are any "well priced" orthodontist.

It will depend on your teeth and they will tell you that after xrays etc as to how long you might need them on for.

My daughter will have hers on for 3 years and approx $6000 spread over that time.
Judith E Hay, Tony R Bunyan, Randal W McAlister all orthadontists at Howick. 534 31 69.

Going by their card Judith appears to be the most qualified with more letters after her name, no idea what they mean though.

Considering you have to go see them every 6 weeks for the entire time make it reasonably close travel distance to where you are.

765060 2009-04-14 20:57:00 Papakura / Papatoetoe area -> $5000-6000. That includes the pan X-ray.

yellow.co.nz

A friend of mine had his done there.

The one I am wearing now was done in Newmarket. You wouldn't want to know the price.

Have rang Judith and will most probably be getting braces from her soon.

Thanks for all the replies:)

765063 2009-04-16 01:59:00 blam my daughter had to wait about a year due to certain teeth not being through yet, also once they did come through she had to have 5 taken out by an oral surgeon to make space for others to move into correct places. About every 3 months she came back for checks and xrays until they were ready to start with the braces.

Judith will do Xrays and moulds first and get a plan of how your teeth will move into their final places.

Cheers for that.

Newer technology means orthodontists like to avoid removing teeth, which means less main for me:p

Newer technology does not come into it at all.

Depends on the mouth and how crowded it is. My daughter still has 1 year of 3 to go with her braces so it is reasonably recent.

Her friend only had hers on 2 years and had no teeth out as she has a slightly wider mouth to accommodate growth.
