764727 2009-04-13 23:43:00 I'm looking to build a timber fence and was wondering if there's a rule of thumb for how far apart the posts should be, and how deep the posts need to go into the ground (I'll cement them in place with quick-crete).

You can just concrete the posts only but its much better for mowing if you make a concrete strip all the way along.

No advice on spacing or various regulations sorry, but I second this - only needs to be as wide as kerbing, and you'll thank yourself later! :)

The posts will actually be stuck into SWMBO's rose garden against the existing foot-high brick boundary fence. :D

764731 2009-04-14 01:43:00 I don't understand this strip of concrete thing - is that to be above the ground? If so, sounds hideous and if not sounds pointless. Just concrete the posts in and you'll be good as gold.

Depth of posts and spacings depends on the fence. Usually 600 - 1000 is a good depth, depending on the length of the post. Space the posts for convenience. If you have 4800 rails for example, space the posts 2400 apart so the rails span 3 posts.

Don't forget to make it straight.

764732 2009-04-14 02:25:00 I go along with the pctek solution in general.

Unless you are building a fence for the new gang headquarters that is.
Or alternatively you don't want the latest boy racer to attack your house.

1 meter deep if you are building a very high fence.

Does it have to keep people out or people in? Razor wire attached seems to work for both. Then does it have to keep cats out? If so the fence has to be very tall.

Its not hideous. Unless you build a fence that doesn't come down to nearly ground level.
Whats hideous is grass growing up it, you can't mow under it, you can weed-eat but you'll hit the bottom of the fence material.

764734 2009-04-14 03:59:00 The rule of thumb for post depth is 1/3 of the post in the ground - so for a 1.8M fence, you want to use 2.7M posts sunk 900mm into the ground - assuming you want the posts to be full height. Otherwise sometimes people will use 2.4M posts, and have the posts slightly higher than the top rail, but not quite to the top of the fence.

If you're using Quikcrete (or Rapidset or Quick-to-Set, or any other equivalent), make sure you wet the sides of the hole properly before pouring in the mix - if you don't, too much water will get drawn out by the soil, weakening the integrity of cement mix.

764735 2009-04-14 07:28:00 Don't do what I did. If you are using square 4x4 posts, get the rails on them quickly, as in, the same day if you can. I put all my posts in (44m fence) and then did the rails, they were very twisted and the fence came out looking horrible.

Doesn't look too bad now, but you will be surprised how much they will twist in the sun.

I agree with roddy boy, most likely you will be using 2.4m long rails, so put your posts at 1.2m centers. No point in putting them at 1m centers and cutting off 400mm of every rail.

764736 2009-04-14 11:26:00 Yeah it's a real ***** trying to put up a fence with warped rails. I've only ever used round posts so it probably wasn't as bad as it would be using square posts.

pctek, I see what you're getting at now. I just prefer grass to concrete whenever possible.
