860774 2010-02-23 00:30:00 Have a new laptop coming with 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium and was wondering if I could transfer via flash drive my install files for programs (Kaspersky, CCleaner, Photoshop etc) from my XP laptop to my new one? I know they'll need updating but it'd surely be quicker than re-downloading it all again. Will I run into any problems doing this or should I re-download them? --Wolf-- (128)
860775 2010-02-23 00:32:00 Umm no. Since most of the programs, will need entries in the registry to work. And copying them across, I would say wont do this. So, it'll be better if you download then reinstall them Speedy Gonzales (78)
860776 2010-02-23 00:38:00 Install files should be OK but sometimes there is a different version for XP and Vista/Win7 so you would need to download again.
You can't just copy the actual Program Files folder to the new machine though.

860779 2010-02-23 00:50:00 I backup the install files for everything I have.

As you say, might need an update or two but beats downloading again when required.

860780 2010-02-23 00:53:00 Same here. I've got all the install files, for whatever on a separate partition. That way when I need to format. I can reinstall whatever straight after Speedy Gonzales (78)
860781 2010-02-23 01:16:00 Yes I know I can't copy the program out of program files or whatever, hence why I said the install files.

So if there is a different version for Win 7 compared to XP it won't work at all?
--Wolf-- (128)
860782 2010-02-23 01:31:00 Umm no, the version for XP should work in Win7. Look on whatever site, see if there is a newer version for Win7. It may support features in Win7 (that you wont get or see in XP). But if its 64 bit, make sure drivers are 64 bit Speedy Gonzales (78)
860783 2010-02-23 01:36:00 Why not just say "Installer(s)" ?

Much less confusing than "install files" which could be confused with "installed files"
