765506 2009-04-18 03:08:00 Self-defence? I was brought up to believe that that was valid to defend oneself from physical harm - not from anonymous name-calling. Scouse (83)

765508 2009-04-18 03:33:00 prefect, Twelvevolts & Zippity: This is NOT to get personal, understand?

Guilty as charged :annoyed: Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "childish" :banana

765509 2009-04-18 05:03:00 I don't know that they do disagree on the facts of the offending, they seem to disagree about who leaked what to who later on. Yes it is probably too late for mediation but I think it would have worked back at the beginning.

Veitch has been on a lot in the past few days that he only changed his plea because a lot of charges were dropped - and that the dropped charges related to incidents that he vigorously denied.

765510 2009-04-18 06:51:00 Try this for not twisting things then - you have stated quite baldly on here that you hit your little brother - and now you are stating quite baldly that you think it would be ok to hit your girlfriend too (if she deserved it).
Yes, I hit my little brother every now and then. Never really hard. Just brotherly quarrels. Don't twist that.

I've never hit a girlfriend (never really had a long term one anyway, only short terms). And please don't say hit - it suggests a closed fist, which I will never inflict on a female. A wake-up slap is all I will ever stoop down to I think. Of course, it will take a lot for me to do it. OK? Probably not, but a human no matter how resilient can be taken down a peg or two by mean words. I mean, while not condoning what Veitch did, Mrs Powell must have emotionally/mentally beat the man for him to do what he did.

Quite boldly stated the fact? I think not my friend. Now that's a twist.

P.S.: you spelled boldly wrong.

I didn't twist it - you said it and claimed you had every right and that it was good for him, didn't you?

Slap/hit - try explaining the difference to a judge, the police or the woman's mother, brother or father...

Really? Maybe she did - maybe not - but that is not a serious assault as was what Veitch perpetrated against her.

I spelt baldly quite correctly. It's an adverb of the word bald and in the context it meant "undisguised" or "blunt".

765512 2009-04-18 08:43:00 I think this thread is about Tony Veitch.

765513 2009-04-18 08:47:00 One thing I don't like about this case is the plea bargaining aspect - Veitch had a "totally confidential sentence indication hearing" the day before he entered the guilty plea.

I would rather not see New Zealand go down the path of plea bargaining as they have in the US. I think it too easy to use such a system to obtain good outcomes for the professionals involved - rather than for victims, defendants and society as a whole.

My understanding is that in this case the crown made the plea bargain. In the US the defence make plea bargains, quite different. Bit silly if Veitch hadn't accepted seeing he had already admitted to that one incident.

765514 2009-04-18 08:48:00 In the Herald, says he tried to kill himself today.
The media is hounding him to death.

Never said anything about rights. Quote me properly or don't claim something I never said. Good for him to a certain extent, but for the most part it's just what we do as brothers.

Slap/hit - try explaining the difference to a judge, the police or the woman's mother, brother or father...
But you understand the difference, correct? That is all I want in this case.

Really? Maybe she did - maybe not - but that is not a serious assault as was what Veitch perpetrated against her.
Of course. Veitch is a weak man, at least mentally and lashed out using extreme physical violence. If Mrs Powell bitched endlessly and will not shut up in spite of Veitch's begging, then a wake-up slap maybe what she needed. Note by wake-up slap I mean a softer-than-mild slap, the sort of slaps you see in drama shows.

Hah. Always thought bald = hairless.

he media is hounding him to death.
Guess what the headline on page 1 will say if that day comes.....
