That must be almost impossible to believe by the current under 40 year old generation, for whom it has always existed, like plastic has...........;)

Adding....I mean to say, there wouldn't have been any West Indian Steel bands if the oil had been packaged in plastic drums.

Was there Bakelite then ?

765878 2009-04-17 10:34:00 Seems a bit of a poke in the eye with a blunt stick the warehouse charging for plastic bags, after all, all that plastic crap from china that the plastic bags hold will end up in the landfill. Same thing at Bunnings all that plastic crap and they say they are worried about the environment.

If the supermarkets are worried about plastic bags and the environment why don't they supply biodegradable bags - don't piss off your customers by charging them. What are they doing with the money, pocketing it? Even if they give it all to greenies what about the money they make on the "environmental friendly bags" They cost us $1-$3.

I'll be using my old shopping New World bags in Pack and Save and visa versa. Should be fun.

765879 2009-04-17 12:38:00 Pak n Save have been charging for their plastic bags for as long as I remember. Didnt stop people from going to Pak n Save ... And Im sure they used to be ~40c per-bag from Pak n Save also?

10x Pak n Save Bags = 2x Re-usable "Enviro bags". We go shopping weekly, so say we bought 8 on the first run, that means after a month they've paid for themselves back and are "saved money" from there on out.

I fail to see what the big deal is, the bags cost next to nothing even if you're going to use them. So your weekly grocery bill goes up by $1-2 ... not gonna break the bank I dont think?

765881 2009-04-17 17:17:00 I have a friend who is 'way up the corporate feeding chain at a supermarket warehouse and he took me into this HUGE retailer's storeroom a few years back .

What I saw was that cockroaches actually live-breed-multiply and wait to be taken to your home in the brown paper shopping bags .

Now that's all well and good, but it begs the question: "What is California's take on supplying work for the exterminators"?

Fees - fees - fees on everything that moves or is consumed .

Recently, the local waste management company (monopoly owned by people with funny, bent noses) has upped the fees for using the tax-supported and paid landfills that they operate as concessionaires under a state license .

That's also fine and good, but it has upped the piles of garbage and trash that's found on the roadsides - popping up and seen in the next morning's light .

Now, to make things much more odious - the fees in the landfills are added to by the "Regulation" that everyone entering the landfill grounds now must purchase a blaze-colored (bright orange) plastic (non-recyclable too!) jacket to warn trucks and others that there's a person dumping their waste in the vicinity . It only costs $4 . 00 - nonrefundable - to physically throw your debris on a pile beside the original entry fee .

One for every passenger, whether they stay in the vehicle or not .

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside . .

The thing about reusable bags is that they are only good if you remember them:lol: We are constantly forgetting ours

765883 2009-04-18 03:12:00 What Pak N Savs charge for the normal plastic bags? The ones in Chch don't. You are usually given some spare to keep/throw out as well. However, I know they are going to start charging for them, 10c a bag?, but I think that will still be a while away yet. --Wolf-- (128)

Pak n Save in the North Island has been charging for bags for ages - to make up for it, they always have stacks of free cardboard boxes you can use instead.
