2009-04-16 10:45:00 | When I had my Z1 900 in the mid seventies, during the summer I could chew out a back tyre in 3 weeks and I didn't drop blackies. As a motorcycle courier around Auckland in the mid-eighties, I would be averaging 6000-7000km a month. A tyre would last about 6 weeks (shaft drives are heavy on tyres!!). I used to ride Michelins - reasonably sticky, rather than hard-wearing, as I liked to stay upright - especially in the wet - and was allergic to tarmac. :)

2009-04-16 16:45:00 | I ride a BMW F650CS road bike that is cheap to run @ 25-28 km/litre, insurance at $330 and I get 14K for a set of tyres. Servicing isn't too bad, either and it's very reliable. The thrill is the riding on the open road, not commuting. | Fishb8 (484) | |

2009-04-16 23:36:00 | :D While we're on the subject, what's a good 250cc to start out on? Ideal would be - as grunty as possible, sporty looking. :punk Are the Kawasaki Ninjas any good? Honda CBR has always looked pretty good...

2009-04-17 00:07:00 | Seriously though the Wikipedia link looks to be pretty informative. It's Kawasaki's top seller (someone must be happy with it!) and pretty much mechanically unchanged for many years (so plenty of parts around) | johcar (6283) | |
2009-04-17 00:17:00 | Definitley. And cheap - can pick one up alomst brand new or with less than 1000km on the clock for under 7.5k. Think that will be the one to go for if I ever feel suicidal... :D Example: www.trademe.co.nz

2009-04-17 07:04:00 | Do scooters not need a warrant? A grands worth of damage from falling off stand is a bit steep, mates 250cc fell off a trailer and other than bit of paint lost needed a clutch lever and foot peg...about 150 bucks Cop bikes are either BMWs or Hondas and trust me, those parts are horrendously priced! The extras on my BMW when I had it cost me an additional $3000 on top of the purchase price. Bikes can be cheap to run but they do have their disadvantages. I got my bike licence in 1998 and it cost me about $500 all-up from memory. I did a basic handling skills course, went for my learners's licence, then my restricted and then my full. I had a Suzuki RG150 and that was a lot of fun and didn't cost much to run or service. I upgraded that a few years later to a BMW F650CS (the same as Fishb8 - very economical to run) and now have a Suzuki Goose 350cc (currently for sale if anyone's looking for a good commuter!). I work from home now so don't use the bike except for fun, but when I did ride to work it was a pain at times. It takes about 10 minutes to get suited up in all the gear and get the bike going, and then depending on your job, you may have to get changed into work clothes at the other end, which also takes time. In winter it's not pleasant riding in the dark, the wet, the cold and the wind. I'm selling my bike now, not because I am scared of riding or anything, it's just I rarely ride it now I work from home and I got a Corvette for my birthday so I tend to take that out when I feel like a blat. Feel free to ask any questions, I still belong to several bike clubs.

2009-04-17 07:50:00 | I remember a trip on my Norton Commando through the desert road with snow and iced water pooling in the front of my great coat between my legs (Yes English army great coat) Got off bike at Turangi so cold when i pulled out my ciggies they fell on the ground and I couldn't hold my lighter, was having a cup of tea and the cup was shaking like someone with Parkinson's disease. I remember passing cars and looking at the driver and passengers sitting there nice and warm with the heater on thinking wtf am I doing this for.
