2009-04-17 02:56:00 | Im with johcar -- Its not rocket science to write a database to handle that kind of thing, surely? We've got some bright sparks amongst us here even, anybody like to volunteer? ;)

2009-04-17 03:17:00 | You'd be a braver man than I to volunteer to tinker with the IRD's back-end systems. I think they're still running COBOL stuff. That said, if the Poms can do it.... | johcar (6283) | |
2009-04-17 03:22:00 | It's an issue of completeness. The IRD don't necessarily know all of your income so issuing a refund could be a little premature if you were employed for 6 months and then self-employed for the other 6 months. Plus NZ has a self-assessment basis. We decide the amount of tax to pay or refund and the IRD may or may not check that is correct. The way compliance is enforced is penalising those who get it wrong through audits. What I find really lame is that I'm guessing you enter all of your information into a website, tick a few boxes accepting responsibility etc. and then they forward it to the IRD for a fee. Why not enter it directly into the IRD website instead? The IRD website will also tell you how much your refund will be before you submit the tax return. www.ird.govt.nz I'm also guessing that anyone who signs up has appointed the company to be their tax agent...... | 765683 | 2009-04-17 03:25:00 | I tried nztaxrefunds for two tax years - but in both cases they came back with "return previously filed for XXXX year". Which is funny, as I haven't filed a return for a long time. So you think! They lodged the returns on your behalf and kept the refunds! {j/k} :p

2009-04-19 03:15:00 | What a ridiculous analogy. If they charged and extra 15% to use the normal checkouts then that'd be a better comparison. User error. If they charged an.... How could you, roddy_boy?

2009-04-19 05:14:00 | Nah .. I just do it myself. You ring them up and they tellya what to do ... They send you a form and you go via it ... and call them and they let you know based on that info what you get or what you owe them. I think taxrefunds.co.nz only benefit is that if you owe them ... you can choose not to ... whereas if you did it with them ......
