| 765233 | 2009-04-16 04:11:00 | Or we could look at the cause of the problem and try to fix that, rather than just blaming them and wanting to shoot them for being pirates. en.wikipedia.org If you get a flat tyre, do you just continue putting air into it or do you fix the gaping hole? What crap.... That sounds a very "do gooder" attitude to murderers. We didn't ask why the Nazis were so bad, we just shot them...............or hung them after a "fair" trial at Nuremberg :) In the good old days there were yard arms to string them up from. In more recent years, during the 1930s, the Americans and the Brits had warships in the South China seas to keep the pirate scurge there under control. My great friend Capt. Ron Hovenden (RN retd. when I knew him), midshipman at Jutland, commanded a destroyer in the China seas and he said he sank several Chinese pirate junks with gunfire, they didn't pussyfoot around in those days. What the guns didn't get the sharks did. A great larger than life character, Vincent owner, friend of Phil Irving, test driver for Fraser Nash and heaps more.......... |

Ten High-Tech Weapons to Repel Pirates www.foxnews.com Terry, what do you think about the international naval force creating a corridor for ships to pass through, say 300 km wide? Any boats or small ships entering this corridor, i.e. pirates, would be automatically blown to bits with no warning shots. The safe passage for legit cargo ships would be at the far eastern part of the corridor so satellite tracking and naval ships / planes would have plenty of time to locate the pirates before they reached the cargo ships. Surely this has been discussed already and I suppose the problem is that there would be some nations doing the pansy politically correct thing of not wanting to play cowboy-shoot-em-up in international waters. |

Well having temporarily donned a redneck mantle, lets continue in the same vein :) Desperate times call for deperate measures . Firstly I don't go along with all the PC "do gooder" guilt feelings we are supposed to have about the plight of peoples in Africa and how it's all due to the unscrupulous West . There was an article in yesterdays Dom Post by Michael Evans, basically saying it's no use trying to pick off the pirates at sea one by one . The best way would be to go in boots and all, invade Somalia and take the pirates out on land . Some international laws also need to be altered so as to remove the 'pussy-footing around syndrome', like not allowing armed merchantmen to enter ports . Having exterminated the pirates then maybe, something could be done for the Somalis as Agent_24 advocates, before a new crop of pirates arises . Though that whole area is probably beyond hope . . . . . . . . . . . It isn't just piracy by Africans, there is still piracy in the South China Seas, though not as much recently, it's just got a bit overshadowed by the Somalis . | 765236 | 2009-04-17 00:21:00 | How will you know the pirates from the ordinary people, they are all just rag-tag black people, the pirates won't have eye patches, wooden legs, parrots or be saying ahhhhhhggg me hearties. Can't see how a land invasion would work, surely this lesson has been learned in Viet Nam, Afghanistan, Iraq, the insurgents can melt away into the crowds, often they are just ordinary citizens who are pissed off having a go at revenge. |

Well that could be a problem, we would have to give them an incentive to wear eye patches, wooden legs, and teach them how to sing sea shanties. etc. I agree, it would be messy and lead to unforeseen problems,I was only quoting and embellishing the Post article. The problem with establishing a corridor that only accredited ships are allowed to enter, could be one of international sea law, free rights of passage and all that. I don't think much of the foxnews article, the best answer is armed merchant men that could blow the pirates out of the water before they got in rifle shot range, each manned by 12 professionals in addition to the normal crew. Joshua Slocum, when he sailed through the Strait of Magellan, in the 1890s scattered tin tacks on the deck to counter the threat of the Terra Del Fuego locals. |

| 765238 | 2009-04-17 02:11:00 | found this: Ninety percent of ships transiting the perilous Gulf of Aden are using the guarded corridor and there have been no hijackings inside the zone since it was set up on Aug. 22, said Danish Commodore Per Bigum Christensen. Read full article HERE (soompi.com). :horrified Some ships and yachts do not use the safe corridor. :waughh: |

But after seizing their weapons and equipment, the sailors must release the bandits at sea to sail back to Somalia because no country has been willing to bring them to trial." Surely this is what yard arms are for, summary justice ??:clap |

| 765241 | 2009-04-17 02:52:00 | Talking of pussy footing,I can't see how the tin tack method would work today! Well, according to Steves foxnews item, the pirates are often going barefoot: "Slippery foam. Boat decks are wet places. Somali pirates are often barefoot. Hence the need for what the acronym-happy Marine Corps calls its Mobility Denial System (MDS), also known as Non-Lethal Slippery Foam (NLSF) or Anti-Traction Material (ATM)." Tin tacks would be better than slippery foam, but the two combined would be very effective, especially when the pirates slip and fall on their bums............ |

Yes you have a good point,so to speak, with the effect of falling on their derrière. Why didn't I think of that.? |
