Just cause you might be confident/good at something doesn't mean everyone is and wants to do it themselves. So Robby, we should fire all checkout staff and only have the self checkouts at all supermarkets, correct? I mean, we can all scan our own items right, no need for someone to do it for us. Just an example. Got an email asking for my IRD number, we'll see what happens now. Totally different, because the information that you enter into these tax refund websites, is exactly the same information that you give to the IRD. eg you still do the same amount of work, you just go to the source, rather than though a middle man. Also didn't you say that you were having trouble with the middlemen, which you wouldn't have if you had gone to the IRD directly. I my income tax and other tax stuff done by accountant anyway, who I trust, as I have companies and trusts. I however wouldn't trust my personal details and IRD number with some of these companies, you don't know how secure their websites are. |

| 765672 | 2009-04-16 09:33:00 | Lucky you I have to rip out all our old kitchen SWMBO went to my work and ordered a new kitchen, oh and I will have to assemble it myself at work in my own time All the sink , pantry, cupboards, stove etc, were all new not long before we moved into this place 3 1/2 years ago, just about finished repairing the kitchen widows from the weekends- just the wall linings to put back on. So the $$ the better half got back, she reckons its enough for paint wallpaper etc - now we have sample wall papers all over the place ---- Oh the decisions :waughh:  The reason she got it done was as WolfForest22 said Just cause you might be confident/good at something doesn't mean everyone is and wants to do it themselves. The better half works for a top NZ Real Estate and deals with thousands of $$ every day relating to properties, but know naff all about personal income tax - and me - Thats what my accountant is for. |

| 765674 | 2009-04-16 14:23:00 | I used TaxRefunds.co.nz simply because I saw the TV Ad. Wasnt expecting anything in particular, but it took me all of 2 minutes to do on their website, so I figured "Hey, why not?" Turns out that yes, they're getting a % of my tax refund, but for the 2 minutes it took me to "earn" $350-ish, I really dont care, its not enough for me to worry about :p |

If they charged and extra 15% to use the normal checkouts then that'd be a better comparison. Well I tried it. It complained, it whinged, it screwed up and after the girl came to sort it 8 times in 12 minutes, I gave up. User error. |

| 765678 | 2009-04-16 23:57:00 | I don't understand the need for these companies either - but for a different reason: if the IRD was operating efficiently and had good business processes in place, there would be no need to have to APPLY for a refund . Their systems would flag credit balances, the same way it flags money owing to them, and send it directly to the taxpayer concerned . Their equivalent in the UK did that for me back in the early eighties when I was there . Technology has come a long way since then, so no excuses!!! |

| 765679 | 2009-04-17 02:07:00 | I tried nztaxrefunds for two tax years - but in both cases they came back with "return previously filed for XXXX year". Which is funny, as I haven't filed a return for a long time. |
