You may save $$ with a large or new bike, but some of these are quite expensive to purchase and their fuel economy may not be much better than a small car. What distance is your commute? Be careful - if you get a motorcycle for the sole purpose of saving commuting costs, you will probably soon find that the pure enjoyment of riding a bike will be your main reason for ditching a car! You need to take into account depreciation on the bike as well as running costs. Our older car is only worth about $1500 and does not depreciate much each year now. If I bought a bike for $4000 or so (was looking at a GN250), the depreciation would be a large proportion of the running costs over a year. It would not cover the extra petrol cost of running the car. Insurance is another higher cost between the bike and the older car (will be only 3rd party this year). Clothing also adds to the cost. A shame really since I miss the bike (I sold my 650 last year). I cycle now whenever the weather allows. Definitely cheaper. |

Good points. Wearing protective clothing while motorcycling is a must, unless you do not value your skin and like staying in hospitals. With helmet, figure to spend at least $500. If your commute is not too far, bicycling is the way to go. Then again, cyclists usually only wear helmets for protection... |

Wow, I wouldn't spend less than $500 on the helmet alone! (Unless Shoei or Bell are making quality helmets at bargain basement prices these days!!) Rule of thumb: if you have a head worth $20, buy a $20 helmet. |

| 764784 | 2009-04-15 12:47:00 | $20 helmets meet the same safety standard as the more expensive brands. And saftey is what its all about, not brands or fashion, and believe it or not helmet prices are driven by fashion. last years "lines" are always cheaper. |

The cheap end range meets the safety standards . The more expensive exceeds the safety standards (more often than not) . There is a world of difference between a polycarbonate shell $20 helmet with a 2ml perspex visor and a $500+ fibreglass and kevlar jobbie with a 3ml or 4ml scratch-resistant visor . |
