860608 2010-02-22 23:24:00 You don't have to be rich, most ISP's give away a free one like the Dynalink which is by no means the best on the market, but nonetheless infinitely better than any D-Link. Heck, Orcon's HomeHub pwns the hell outta any free modem ever given away! Chilling_Silence (9)
860609 2010-02-22 23:27:00 What *really* needs to happen is Telecom contact all those users who have one of said potentially vulnerable modems, tell them about the issue, and how to rectify it either by changing password or providing a new modem.

It'd be like selling a car with GPS in it, then saying "Oh by the way, we forgot to tell you that it's able to be remotely controlled by anybody who has a GPS receiver and the right software, so you might wanna look into that". Just wouldn't happen! Especially not if you were Toyota, you'd recall the lot :D

860610 2010-02-22 23:31:00 That would be good IF I were moving to another ISP. BUT, I'm not. You've probably got more chance of getting hit by this FF exploit Speedy Gonzales (78)
860611 2010-02-23 04:03:00 If you want, if you have one of these routers, I guess you could phone up the isp that gave you it (telecom in my instance. big surprise there), and say more or less that there is a virus going around that is targeting your type of routers that YOUR isp gave to you, that YOUR isp DIDN'T warn you about, and that your isp should give you a better router or else you will switch providers to orcon, or some other isp that gives out better routers.
Just an idea, but if it did work, you could get a free router from it.

860612 2010-02-23 04:05:00 I brought it, so cant blame the ISP. And the ISP wouldnt know, they didnt make it either Speedy Gonzales (78)
860613 2010-02-23 04:16:00 but they supplied it to us? oh well. worth a shot, anyway. jonathan (15437)
860614 2010-02-23 04:16:00 I blame myself for having a DSL 302G that works without any problems. Sweep (90)

True, but you have the option to buy your own. I was going to change from Xnet to Xtra for example. But, I would still have a 12 mth contract (so someone from Telecom told me). I thought that was WHY they gave you a free modem/router. Obviously not. It applies whether they give you a modem, or you buy your own. They know where they can stick it

860616 2010-02-23 05:04:00 You can ring up Telecom (If you're already with them) and say you wanna be on a 12-month contract and they'll give you a free modem. If you're with Xnet, then that's your own fault, and modems are likely the least of your worries ;)

You'd be surprised, a friends neighbor had their router just taken out, it's here in NZ already ...
